Computer Science Internship – Fall 2026
SOFWERX, operated under an agreement between the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and DefenseWERX, provides a forum for accelerating the delivery of innovative capabilities and refining them through exploration, experimentation, and assessment of promising technology. The internship is located in Ybor City and is administered by the University of South Florida Institute of Applied Engineering. Upon hire, interns are considered both a USF IAE Temporary Employee and a SOFWERX student intern.
TimeCommitment
- Hours of operation: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
- Fall/Spring semesters: 15–20 hours per week.
- Summer semester: 20–29 hours per week.
- In‑person internship with limited remote work opportunities.
- Participation in employee events and team building.
- Resume building and career exploration.
- Application of skills and knowledge to real workplace projects.
- Letter of recommendation available upon completion.
- Potential follow‑on internship based on performance.
USD 18.50 per hour.
Responsibilities- Design, prototype, and test various software systems.
- Build, deploy, and maintain applications and infrastructure within AWS Cloud.
- Develop user‑friendly interfaces for displaying analyzed data and AI model outputs.
- Conduct research on related technologies and engage with subject matter experts.
- U.S. citizenship required due to partial funding by the U.S. Department of Defense and possible access to Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field.
- Junior or Senior standing with a current GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Strong background in software development.
- Experience with Python and familiarity with machine learning libraries such as Tensor Flow, PyTorch, or Scikit‑learn.
- Knowledge of RESTful API architecture and web development (React/Next.js, JavaScript) is a plus.
- Experience with Linux‑based systems.
- Experience with various AWS services is desired.
- Strong troubleshooting, planning, and organizational skills.
- Well‑developed interpersonal and communication skills.
- Willingness to work in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment.
- Participation in weekly market research, submitting minimum required entries on new capabilities, technologies, companies, and organizations relevant to warfighter solutions.
