About the Team
The Database Engineering Team at Workday designs, builds, develops, maintains, and supervises database infrastructure and ensures that all of Workday’s data‑related needs are met with scale and high availability, serving customers on private and public cloud platforms.
About the RoleThis role supports one or more direct or indirect contracts with the U.S. federal government, which requires that all employees working on the contracts be United States citizens (naturalized or native). The position is responsible for architecting, designing, developing, and managing a DBaaS service for Workday Database Infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Design and develop APIs to improve availability, scalability, and performance of databases running on multiple clouds.
- Write APIs and develop dashboards to measure database KPIs, keeping observability as a core focus in all database monitoring.
- Improve and implement auto‑remediation techniques.
- Provide support for large‑scale database instances across production, non‑production, and development environments.
- Serve in an on‑call rotation supporting database infrastructure.
- Partner with service and performance teams for continuous architecture improvements, resiliency, and performance.
- 6+ years of experience designing, developing, automating, and managing mission‑critical production workloads on MySQL, PostgreSQL, CloudSQL, and other cloud‑native databases.
- 3+ years of experience in backend development using modern programming languages (Golang, Python, Java) including architecture, design, and development.
- 2+ years of hands‑on experience with cloud hyperscalers (AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure).
- 2+ years of experience managing clustered, highly‑available database services on various Linux flavors.
- Minimum 3+ years working experience with modern Dev Ops technologies and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker), service deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
- Familiarity with AWS Gov Cloud and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance (TS/SCI w/CI Poly preferred).
- Knowledge of automation tools such as Terraform, Chef, and Ansible.
- Familiarity with Ceph Storage, Gluster, MySQL Orchestrator, Percona MHA, Percona Galera, Vitess, and Pure Storage.
- Experience with database architecture, design, replication, clustering, and high‑availability/disaster recovery.
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Self‑starter, highly motivated, and ability to learn quickly.
- Excellent team player with extraordinary written and verbal communication skills.
- BS or MS degree in computer science.
Primary location (USA, VA, Reston): $137,000 – $205,400 annual base salary. Additional U.S. locations: $123,900 – $222,000. Eligible for bonus plan, role‑specific commission/bonus, and annual stock grants.
Work ArrangementWorkday combines in‑person and remote work. Employees are expected to be in the office or in the field at least 50% of the time each quarter, with flexibility around scheduling.
