AI Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff AI Engineer based in Canada.

This is a high-impact opportunity for a senior AI engineering leader to design, build, and scale production-grade AI systems that solve complex business challenges. In this role, you will own technical architecture, drive AI/ML innovation, and establish engineering practices that enable reliable and responsible AI development. Working across engineering, product, and leadership teams, you will translate emerging technologies into scalable solutions with measurable impact.

You will contribute to advanced AI initiatives involving generative AI, agentic systems, and machine learning platforms while helping shape the future of AI-powered products. • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of complex AI and machine learning systems from concept through production, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Build and evolve AI platforms, pipelines, and infrastructure that support repeatable model development, deployment, monitoring, and optimization.
• Establish technical standards and best practices for AI engineering, including responsible AI principles, system reliability, security, and performance optimization.
• Design and deliver advanced generative AI and agentic systems that operate effectively within real‑world workflows and enterprise environments.
• Partner with product, engineering, and leadership teams to define AI strategies and align technical decisions with business objectives.
• Communicate complex AI concepts, tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Lead architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical decision‑making processes while raising engineering standards across teams.
• Mentor and support engineers through coaching, code reviews, knowledge sharing, and collaboration on complex technical challenges.
• Own high‑impact and ambiguous initiatives, driving them from exploration to production while balancing quality, cost, safety, and performance.

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years focused on building AI/ML systems in production environments.
• Strong software engineering background with expert‑level programming experience in Python or similar languages and a focus on scalable, maintainable systems.
• Proven experience designing and deploying complex generative AI and agentic systems in production.
• Deep knowledge of AI frameworks, orchestration tools, and modern machine learning development practices.
• Strong experience building and optimizing RAG pipelines, including chunking strategies, embeddings, vector databases, and advanced retrieval methods.
• Expertise with cloud platforms, particularly AWS services and generative AI capabilities.
• Experience creating AI evaluation frameworks, observability solutions, and monitoring capabilities for LLM‑based applications.
• Strong understanding of AI safety, responsible AI practices, prompt injection prevention, privacy considerations, and secure handling of sensitive data.
• Advanced knowledge of API design, third‑party integrations, and large‑scale service architectures.
• Experience optimizing AI systems for cost and performance, including token management, caching strategies, model routing, and quantization techniques.
• Hands‑on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized application deployments.
• Demonstrated expertise using AI‑powered development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar solutions in daily engineering workflows.
• Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical direction across teams.
