About the Role
Nationwide’s Technology team seeks a Software Engineer to support the Office of the Chief Legal Officer (OCLO) portfolio. The engineer will deliver technology solutions that enable legal operations, compliance, regulatory obligations, ethics, associate giving, and other strategic corporate functions. The role involves modernization of platforms, automation of processes, decision‑making improvement, and unlocking new capabilities through AI and intelligent automation.
Job Description SummaryThe Software Engineer will mentor and lead others to deliver high‑quality, cost‑effective technology solutions. Projects will involve crafting new software applications or modifying/supporting existing packaged or custom‑built applications. The engineer will work within Nationwide’s evolving AI Development Lifecycle (AI‑DLC), leveraging modern engineering practices, AI‑assisted development tools, and a Build/Buy‑neutral approach to design appropriate solutions.
Key Responsibilities- Apply secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to protect data and technology solutions from threats and vulnerabilities.
- Mentor and train teammates on design techniques, tools, and coding standards.
- Provide strategic advice on leveraging technology to achieve business goals.
- Drive cross‑collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams.
- Analyze, develop, test, debug, document and deploy software in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
- Champion the use of Dev Sec Ops practices, tooling, and techniques.
- Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Participate in continuous learning and improvement through training, practice, and innovation.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or a related field (strongly preferred).
- Six years of experience in programming and systems analysis.
- Three years of experience in project management (preferred).
- Hands‑on technical leadership experience guiding project teams and setting technical direction.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, C++, Python, or JavaScript.
- In‑depth knowledge of the software development life cycle.
- Proven ability to solve sophisticated business and development problems.
- Ability to thrive in a team environment.
- Insurance or financial services industry knowledge is a plus.
- Leadership skills, competencies, and experiences that demonstrate the ability to influence and inspire others.

Columbus, Ohio (remote work may be considered for qualified candidates). - Reporting to:
Technology Manager/Director. - Overtime Eligibility:
Not Eligible (Exempt). - Working Conditions:
Normal office environment with potential on‑call responsibilities after normal hours and/or on weekends. - Actively accepts applications until 07/26/2026.
