About

The Role

As a Tech Lead, Machine Learning Engineer within Wayve's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Product Engineering team, you will play a critical role in advancing the navigation workstream for our comprehensive autonomous driving system. This system encompasses Level 2+ (L2+), Level 3 (L3), and robotaxi products, offering a unique opportunity to oversee the entire lifecycle of navigation models—from training to deployment in real-world vehicles.

You will be responsible for setting the technical direction for navigation machine learning, ensuring the development of robust, scalable, and high-performance models that operate seamlessly within our autonomous driving ecosystem. Joining a small, high-impact team, you will have the opportunity to influence the future of autonomous navigation technology, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to shaping the company's strategic technical vision.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, with a proven track record of deploying deep learning systems into production environments.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, CUDA, and familiarity with ML frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Hands-on experience with transformer-based and multimodal architectures, including vision-language models (VLM) and vision-language-action models (VLA).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, train, and deploy end-to-end ML models for real-world applications.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end learning approaches relevant to autonomous driving, embodied AI, or related domains.
  • Experience taking full ownership of technical work streams, from research and experimentation to deployment and maintenance.

Preferred qualifications include prior work in autonomous driving, experience with simulation and evaluation frameworks, and familiarity with navigation, route planning, or sensor fusion techniques. Candidates with research publications or industry experience in perception, planning, or controls are highly valued.

Responsibilities
  • Leading the development and refinement of route planning, rerouting, and driving algorithms across L2+, L3, and robotaxi products.
  • Training, validating, and deploying end-to-end navigation models, ensuring their robustness and safety in production vehicles.
  • Defining the technical roadmap and vision for navigation machine learning, aligning with the company's strategic goals.
  • Collaborating closely with evaluation, robot software, and data platform teams to iteratively improve model performance through rapid experimentation.
  • Utilizing closed-loop and open-loop evaluation frameworks to measure driving quality, validate models, and ensure production readiness.
  • Mentoring junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Shaping the long-term technical direction of the navigation ML workstream to support the company's growth and innovation objectives.
Benefits
  • Wayve offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the well-being and professional growth of its employees.
  • The role includes a competitive salary range from $336,400 to $381,600, complemented by a generous equity package.
  • The company operates a hybrid work model, combining in-office collaboration in Sunnyvale, CA, with remote work flexibility to promote work-life balance.
  • Employees have access to health insurance, paid time off, professional development opportunities, and a vibrant, inclusive workplace culture that encourages innovation and collaboration.
