The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:Staff Software Engineer - Full Stack serves as an emerging technical leader while remaining a hands‑on individual contributor who operates with a high degree of autonomy, ownership, and accountability. With minimal oversight, you will lead technical initiatives, deliver high‑quality software, and help the team execute against project goals, timelines, and customer needs.
In this role, you will influence technical direction by working with engineers, product managers, designers, and client stakeholders to build scalable, maintainable solutions. You’ll balance technical excellence with pragmatic decisions, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and help improve engineering practices.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Lead the technical design and implementation of complex full stack applications.
- Plan and execute technical roadmaps with minimal guidance.
- Work closely with product managers, designers, engineers, and client stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Translate ambiguous business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Improve system reliability, maintainability, and performance through refactoring, documentation, automated testing, and observability.
- Build secure, accessible, and resilient applications using modern engineering best practices.
- Present technical concepts, implementation approaches, and architectural tradeoffs to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
- Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
