JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Service Worker - Bus Driver FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO:
Supervisor of Transportation PAY GRADE: CLS-09 | HOURLY
LOCATION: Education Support Services DAYS: On-Call, Temporary, As Needed
JOB  & DATE: SUP-00, October 2025

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Transportation, the Substitute Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and extracurricular events on an as-needed basis. Substitute Bus Drivers are not scheduled daily employees but are contacted when a regular driver is absent, when additional routes or trips are added, or when other short-term coverage needs arise.
This position ensures compliance with all Department of Transportation, Department of Education, State, and District safety regulations. It is an at-will, temporary position that provides coverage based on district need.

REQUIREMENTS

Education Level Details
High School Diploma or GED

License / Certification Required
Driver's license with no more than 8 points in 3 years.
Hold or ability to obtain, and maintain, a CDL Class B license with P2S Endorsement
DOT medical card, First Aid and CPR certification.

Work Experience Required
Transportation experience preferred

KEY FUNCTIONS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties
  • TSafely operate a school bus or district vehicle to transport students to and from designated locations.
  • Ensure student safety during loading, unloading, and transport, including securing wheelchairs, car seats, and other safety devices.
  • Support students with special needs, including those with physical, medical, or behavioral concerns.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, documenting findings and reporting any safety or maintenance issues.
  • Maintain accurate route records, mileage logs, and student counts.
  • Communicate professionally with dispatch, school personnel, and families regarding routes, delays, and incidents.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies such as breakdowns or accidents.
  • Perform routine bus care including cleaning, fueling, and operating manual or automatic lifts.
  • Attend safety meetings or training as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May provide direction to assigned bus monitors or aides during routes.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle, as well as to walk, bend, climb, and balance. Occasional tasks may require kneeling, crouching, or crawling, particularly during bus inspections or mechanical repairs. The employee must regularly lift and/or move items up to 40 pounds, such as equipment, tools, or student belongings.
Work Environment:
Employees in these roles primarily work in and around school buses, garages, maintenance shops, and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions. Exposure to vehicle fumes, loud noise, grease, and mechanical parts is common. Employees may occasionally be required to work evenings, early mornings, or weekends for field trips, special events, or emergency transportation needs. In certain cases, remote work may be necessary for training or administrative tasks during district closures or special circumstances.
