Tamper Operator
Railserve is hiring dependable, safety-focused Tamper Operators in Indiana to support railway maintenance operations. This is a hands-on, outdoor role responsible for operating tamping equipment to maintain track geometry and ensure safe, efficient rail operations.
In this role, you will operate rail-mounted tamping machines to align and stabilize track, working closely with maintenance-of-way crews to ensure track conditions meet safety and operational standards.

Schedule:
Full-time; schedule varies based on maintenance windows, travel, and project needs (including nights and weekends as required)
Compensation:
Starting at $30.00 per hour (based on experience)
Duties:
- Operate rail-mounted tamping machines to align, level, and compact ballast
- Follow track maintenance schedules and supervisor direction
- Adjust and calibrate tamping equipment for specific rail conditions
- Read and interpret track diagrams, work orders, and machine settings
- Conduct pre-operation inspections to ensure equipment safety and functionality
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on tamping equipment
- Collaborate with maintenance-of-way crews including track inspectors and welders
- Report track defects, unsafe conditions, and equipment issues
- Maintain accurate daily logs and production records
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 1–2 years of experience in railroad maintenance or rail equipment operation
- Strong understanding of track geometry and alignment principles
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment repairs
- Knowledge of railway safety standards and protocols (FRA, AREMA preferred)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to travel and work in remote locations as required
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle materials (up to ~50 lbs)
- Ability to climb on and off rail equipment safely
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred
- Equipment certification required when applicable
