Tamper Operator

Railserve is hiring dependable, safety-focused Tamper Operators in Indiana to support railway maintenance operations. This is a hands-on, outdoor role responsible for operating tamping equipment to maintain track geometry and ensure safe, efficient rail operations.

In this role, you will operate rail-mounted tamping machines to align and stabilize track, working closely with maintenance-of-way crews to ensure track conditions meet safety and operational standards.

Schedule:

Full-time; schedule varies based on maintenance windows, travel, and project needs (including nights and weekends as required)

Compensation:
Starting at $30.00 per hour (based on experience)

Duties:

• Operate rail-mounted tamping machines to align, level, and compact ballast
• Follow track maintenance schedules and supervisor direction
• Adjust and calibrate tamping equipment for specific rail conditions
• Read and interpret track diagrams, work orders, and machine settings
• Conduct pre-operation inspections to ensure equipment safety and functionality
• Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on tamping equipment
• Collaborate with maintenance-of-way crews including track inspectors and welders
• Report track defects, unsafe conditions, and equipment issues
• Maintain accurate daily logs and production records

Job Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• 1–2 years of experience in railroad maintenance or rail equipment operation
• Strong understanding of track geometry and alignment principles
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor equipment repairs
• Knowledge of railway safety standards and protocols (FRA, AREMA preferred)
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• Ability to travel and work in remote locations as required
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to lift, carry, and handle materials (up to ~50 lbs)
• Ability to climb on and off rail equipment safely
• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred
• Equipment certification required when applicable
