Job Description Summary
- The Law Library Academic Support Specialist (graduate student assistant) will assist library staff in the daily operation of the law library. The law library academic support specialist will help in technical services, circulation and interlibrary loan, basic research questions, orientation, and other administrative support in the law library. This position offers an opportunity to develop professional skills in a law library setting, with a focus on enhancing student engagement and academic experience.
Specific Duties
- Library Operations and Technical Services
- Assist the Library Manager in the daily operation of the law library, including technical services, catalog maintenance, and enforcing library policies. Maintain the law library's physical and digital collections, ensuring organization and accessibility. Support collection and facility maintenance by helping to organize materials and ensure library spaces are welcoming and functional. - Basic Legal Research Support and Orientation
- Provide basic research assistance to students. Assist in the orientation of library resources, preparing materials, and engaging with students to promote research skills. Develop and manage tutorials. - Academic Technology Support
- Provide academic technology support, including troubleshooting library equipment, classroom technology, and resolving account-related issues. Assist faculty and students with the course management system, offering technical guidance and addressing any access concerns. Maintain and troubleshoot library technology to ensure resources such as printers, scanners, and digital research tools are operational. - Customer Service and Library Administration
- Staff the circulation desk, manage the check-in/out process for library materials, and assist with maintaining user accounts. Provide friendly and professional customer service to patrons, addressing inquiries in person, via email, or over the phone, and referring complex questions to appropriate staff members. Track usage statistics and compile reports related to library services, contributing to the improvement of library operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a current University of La Verne Student. Reliable Transportation (This position is located at the Ontario Law School Campus). Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn library-specific software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Federal Work Study is preferred, but not required. Experience working in a library or academic support setting. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Benefits Summary
- Employees are eligible for the following benefits:
One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours. University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan – can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds. In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.
Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
