Water/Wastewater Technician

The City of Ontario has an exciting opportunity for a Water/Wastewater Technician to join the Environmental Programs Division of the Ontario Municipal Utilities Company.
The Water/Wastewater Technician is responsible for protecting the city sewer collection system and its employees, the local wastewater treatment plant and its employees, the public, and the environment through performing commercial and industrial facility inspections, drafting wastewater discharge permits, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal wastewater regulations through performing monitoring and enforcement activities.
The Ideal Candidate will possess:
* Experience in environmental compliance inspection or chemical wastewater laboratory analytical experience.
* A technical background in wastewater regulations and knowledge in wastewater and pretreatment regulation.
* The ability to perform extensive report writing, plan review, complex calculations, and experience working with a wide variety of computer software applications.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills with a customer service orientation.
* Outstanding interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both coworkers and the public.
* Strong problem solving and analytical abilities to research and resolve complex problems.

The following procedures will apply:
* Separate Promotional and Open (external) Eligibility Lists will be established.
* The hiring department may consider candidates on the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.
* The Open Eligibility List will consist of external applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
* The Promotional Eligibility List will be comprised of current City employees (full or part-time) who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
* The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below.
Qualified candidates whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements of the position and needs of the City will be asked to participate in an Examination process that may include a combination of an in-person Panel Oral Interview, in-person Practical Exam, Training and Experience evaluation, and/or in-person Written Exam.
The Environmental Programs Division
The Environmental Programs Division implements the national pretreatment program, which is a component of the Inland Empire Utilities Agency's (IEUA's) Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. The program works cooperatively with the IEUA's pretreatment program to reduce conventional and toxic pollutant levels discharged by industries and other nondomestic wastewater sources into the local municipal sewer systems and into the environment.
By minimizing pollutant discharges to the POTW and, ultimately, the Santa Ana River, the program delivers significant environmental and public health benefits, enhances opportunities for the recycling and reclamation of municipal and industrial wastewater and sludge, promotes sustainable water resource management, and helps safeguard vital drinking water supplies.
