Police Dispatcher - First line of communications for the Police Department
Salary
:
Police Dispatcher: $5,945.34 - $7,297.34 per month;
Senior Police Dispatcher: $6,536.40 - $8,021.87 per month.
Overview
The Ontario Police Department is seeking applicants with one year of continuous experience in public safety emergency communications and two-way radio operations to join the Department's communication operations. Dispatchers are the first to act in an emergency and serve as a key link between the public and Police personnel. Police Dispatchers are eligible for promotion to Senior Police Dispatcher upon meeting the position’s requirements, satisfactory performance evaluations, and management recommendation.
Ideal Candidate
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to receive, interpret, and relay information clearly, courteously, and tactfully.
- Operate computer aided dispatching (CAD) equipment and other equipment quickly, accurately, and concurrently.
- Respond to emergency and problem situations calmly and effectively.
- Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment and initiative, while remaining productive.

Eligibility and Selection Procedures
- The Eligibility List will include internal and external applicants who meet qualifications and complete required selection processes.
- The hiring department may consider internal applicants before external candidates on the Eligibility List.
- The City reserves the right to accept the first up to one hundred (100) qualified applications if necessary.
- Completed applications will be reviewed; only qualified applicants whose qualifications best meet the position needs will be invited to participate further.
Background Check Process
- Appointments are subject to in-depth background investigation and a physical examination including a drug screening. The process may take several months.
- The background investigation may include interviews, criminal and credit checks, polygraph, and physiological evaluation.

- Commentary on suitability from relatives, references, and acquaintances.
- Verification of educational history.
- Disclosure of residences and work history with regard to dependability and reliability.
- Verification of military service records as applicable.
- Assessment of personal finances management; debt does not automatically disqualify.
- Evaluation of criminal, driving, and insurance records.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
High School diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
One (1) year of continuous experience in public safety emergency communications and two-way radio operations and techniques, and complaint phone processing within the last three (3) years.
