Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with occasional in-person meetings (location-dependent), expected to be on-site during convention dates, possibly including the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

Position Overview

The Animal Control PSM (Public Safety Monitor) will be primarily responsible for verifying persons entering convention spaces have the correct credentials for entry (for example, a convention badge). They will also ensure attendees are compliant with all pertinent convention policies to maintain a safe and orderly environment. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, possess strong communication skills, and be able to handle high-pressure situations.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence may be required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service: Provide clear and courteous communication with guests and staff while maintaining professionalism and ensuring compliance with convention policies.
  • Credential Verification: Check and verify Credentials for all individuals entering restricted areas of the venue, ensuring that only persons with the correct credentials gain access. You will be assigned a post and will be responsible for the location.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Work in parallel with venue security to identify and report any issues related to noncompliance, unauthorized access attempts, or any other safety concerns.
  • Incident Reporting: Report and Document any breaches of policy or suspicious activities to the Animal Control Lead promptly.
  • Compliance: An Animal Control PSM will personally adhere to all venue policies, procedures, and safety regulations. They will ensure that convention policies are followed by attendees for the safety of all.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify lacking or counterfeit credentials or unauthorized access attempts.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations with composure.
  • Preferred ability to stand for extended periods and perform duties in various weather conditions if required.
Working Conditions
  • This role requires standing for long periods and working in outdoor weather environments. Reasonable accommodations can be made for individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends–depending on event schedules
Assignments

Assignments may include: access control, line management, working at indoor or outdoor posted positions, and following policy to elevate situations to the appropriate level of leadership.
