Broadband Technician (Part-Time)

The City of Ontario has an exciting opportunity in supporting one of the fastest growing broadband fiber-optic networks? The City of Ontario's Broadband Operations Department is seeking a Broadband Technician to assist in the development and support of building and sustaining a broadband fiber optic infrastructure Citywide. The Broadband Technician, under general supervision, performs a wide range of specialized technical duties in the operation, maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of the City's broadband communications network.

The Broadband Technician will be assigned with responding to regular, emergency and on-call support requests and maintaining accurate records of service.

This current vacancy within the Broadband Department of the Management Services Agency is for part time only and the eligibility list may be used for any full time and part time vacancies in the future.

The essential functions typically performed by the
Broadband Technician include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Performs specialized technical duties in the operation, installation, repair, and maintenance of the City s broadband communications network.
• Performs operational and maintenance-related duties including splicing, fiber optic cable distribution changes, pulling, laying, aligning and positioning fiber optic network equipment.
• Mounts splice closures, racks, switches, and other fiber optics distribution equipment.
• Troubleshoots and installs copper and fiber optic data cables.
• Performs routine tests on the City s fiber optic network for preventative and troubleshooting maintenance.
• Responds to emergency and non-emergency service calls.
• Maintains records and prepares reports related to maintenance activities and technical support requests.
• Reads and interprets blueprints and fiber optic design plans and diagrams.
• Performs audits of fiber optics point of presence locations, fiber strand availability, and equipment and material locations.
• Performs fusion splicing, optical connectivity testing, fiber distribution unit configuration, and activation at various locations.
• Attends safety, compliance, and technical trainings.
• Provides guidance and support for citywide broadband systems.
• Job responsibilities require travel.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience

Three (3) years of technical experience in fiber optics operations, installation, or splicing.

Desirable

• Technical certifications or post-secondary coursework in electronics, fiber optics, fiber installation, splicing, testing, and telecommunications technology.
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.

Special Requirements

• Ability to work any shift, including evenings and weekends.
• Subject to after-hours and on-call duties.
