Overview
Do you enjoy being outdoors and helping others? The City of Ontario invites you to spend your time with us as a Lifeguard. The Recreation & Community Services department is seeking enthusiastic individuals to staff its five aquatic facilities located throughout the City. Lifeguards observe swimmers to ensure safety and enforce rules to guard lives and prevent accidents.
The Lifeguard is a paid, part-time/temporary position in the City's year-round aquatics program, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. The work schedule is determined by availability, operating hours, and the incumbent's skill level.

The City of Ontario's Recreation & Community Services Department provides year-round recreational services for all ages. The department operates six community centers, a senior center, programs in over thirty parks, three dog parks, and oversees a municipal golf course. The department is growing and plans for a regional sports complex, park enhancements, and new community centers are in development.

Desirable CertificationsValid American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, and First Aid for the professional rescuer or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications and TrainingAbility to obtain valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, and First Aid for the professional rescuer or equivalent within three (3) months of employment.
Special Requirements- Must be at least 15 years of age at time of hire.
- Ability to work various schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Note: All candidates under 18 who have not graduated from high school must obtain a work permit by the date of hire orientation.
Physical and Environmental DemandsWork is in a pool environment requiring stamina for moderate to heavy lifting and extended periods in the water. Outdoor pool environments may include wet and slippery conditions, variable weather, and exposure to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals, as well as potential exposure to blood and body fluids during first aid and CPR.
Selection ProcessNote:
If your application is accepted, you will be invited to an assessment process that includes an interview and swim test. Assessment dates and details will be provided later. All potential hires must pass fingerprint review, pre-employment physical examination, and TB test.
The City provides Lifeguard Training courses to help you obtain the required certifications. The following certifications must be maintained throughout employment and obtained within three months of employment:
Lifeguard Training, CPR, and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. If you do not already possess the required certifications, you may enroll in City-provided training.
Note:
Successful completion of water safety courses does not guarantee employment with the City of Ontario.
Participants must:
- Be 15 years old prior to the final class session.
- Swim 300 yards (breaststroke and front crawl).
- Be able to retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7 feet and swim 25 yards with it.
- Attend all classes without exceptions.
