- Full Time Purpose of Position:

The Senior Technologist – Pulmonary Function is responsible for the technical organization and day-to-day coordination of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. In addition to performing the full range of pulmonary diagnostic procedures, this position organizes daily workflow, provides technical guidance to assigned staff and students, ensures proper techniques are utilized, ensures work output meets established clinical and quality standards, the position provides advanced clinical expertise in pulmonary diagnostics and supports the operational, quality, and educational mandate of the department.

Duties:
Clinical & Technical Leadership
  • Perform advanced pulmonary diagnostic testing in accordance with College and professional standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and clinical leadership to staff and students.
  • Organize daily workload and ensure equitable distribution of assignments.
  • Ensure diagnostic accuracy, reliability, and adherence to established turnaround times.
  • Administer medications and noxious provoking agents in accordance with applicable controlled acts and legislation.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining appropriateness of testing and when to modify or terminate procedures for patient safety.
  • Communicate diagnostic findings effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.
Quality & Equipment Oversight
  • Organize and supervise preventative maintenance and calibration of pulmonary diagnostic equipment.
  • Monitor equipment performance to ensure ongoing effectiveness, accuracy, precision and compliance with standards.
  • Participate in evaluation, trial and recommendation of new equipment purchases.
  • Organize and oversee quality control and quality assurance programs within the section.
  • Identify, implement and monitor corrective actions when required.
  • Review and follow up on laboratory incidents and participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Operational & Administrative Functions
  • Assist in the development and annual review of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure departmental documentation and records are maintained in accordance with legislative and accreditation requirements.
  • Support inventory monitoring and fiscal responsibility within the section.
  • Attend laboratory and departmental meetings and assign a designate when required.
  • Provide cross-coverage to other diagnostic areas as operationally required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current General Registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO); OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, Nursing, or related field with current General Registration in good standing with the Canadian Association of Cardio-Pulmonary Technologists (CACPT).
  • Current BCLS certification required.
Experience:
  • Minimum five (5) years recent experience in a Pulmonary Function Laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical guidance, clinical instruction or leadership within a diagnostic setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in quality assurance, equipment calibration and troubleshooting
Skills & Ability:
  • Advanced knowledge of pulmonary diagnostic theory and clinical application.
  • Working knowledge of pulmonary diagnostic equipment including plethysmograph, CO analyzer, He analyzer, spirometers, pressure transducers, pneumotachographs, oximeters and associated software.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workflow and provide technical leadership.
  • Strong assessment and clinical judgment skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and customer service skills.
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
  • Behaviour consistent with Hospital Mission, Values and Standards of Performance.
