Transport Officer, Correctional Officer

The Transport Unit is comprised of four offices statewide. The Ontario, Oregon Transport Office is recruiting for one full-time permanent Transport Officer.

This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

About the Job – Your Role

The Transport Unit provides secure transportation to authorized locations for the adults in the custody of the Department of Corrections. This position is part of the Transport Unit structure and manages the operational concerns of mass transfers, medical and court trips, and high security adult in custody movement consistent with prison and public safety. Additional position information:

  • Hours of work consist of a four-day work week of 10-hour shifts. Transport Officer hours can be flexed: 2 hours prior to their normal start time or 2 hours later than their normal start time on a daily basis depending on the daily operational needs.
  • Transport Officers need to qualify on a number of different weapon systems, meeting the Oregon State Police standards to perform the duties of this job.
  • Transport Officers need to be Taser qualified or willing to go through Taser qualification and must carry a Taser during their job duties.
  • Transport Officers must be willing to work overtime as needed, sometimes with minimal notice. There are times when staff are scheduled to conduct courtroom escorting, adult in custody transports, or medical trips where relief is not available, which may require overtime. Staff applying for these positions should be aware these situations often occur with Transport Officers.
  • Transport Officers transfer adults in custody from one institution to another in a variety of different types of vehicles. Applicable training will be provided on these different types of vehicles.

Transport Officers interact with the public daily and are expected to remain professional and courteous at all times while promoting public safety through ensuring sound security practices, maintaining positive control of adults in custody, and providing good customer service to all stakeholders.

All Transport Officers must have a valid Driver's license and a LEDS check will be required. Successful candidates will be required to pass urinalysis testing for assignment to Transport.

Minimum & Special Qualifications
  • Currently in the Security Series Classifications at Correctional Officer level or higher
  • Possess a valid Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate
Requested Skills
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and clear a Department of Motor Vehicles check
  • Possess and maintain a clear criminal history
  • Able to pass an alcohol and drug test
  • The ability to pass Range Qualifications
Preferred Skills

Preference will be given to those candidates that possess the following criteria:

  • Valid and Current Oregon Class B Driver's License with Airbrake and Passenger Endorsement
  • Compliance with all elements of Department of Corrections Contract 5321 (State Police IAA)
  • Prior experience working in the Transport Officer Classification and serving in that capacity with the Department's Transport Unit
