TES Clinical Child Life Specialist
The College of Human Sciences is recruiting for a TES Clinical Child Life Specialist. This role will provide information, education, support and guidance to parents, siblings and other family members. The specialist promotes effective coping and play, preparation, education, bereavement support and self‑expression activities. They provide emotional support for families and encourage optimum development of children facing challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization.
This position specifically encompasses work in the Emergency Department, Pediatric Unit, Radiology, and NICU at a community‑based hospital serving both pediatric and adult patients.
Temporary Employment Services (TES), a unit of the Auburn University Department of Human Resources, is an in‑house support center established to meet the university’s temporary employment needs. TES provides qualified temporary employees in a wide variety of occupations to meet staffing needs. Temporary employees are hired for reasons such as:
- Assistance in the place of a regular employee who is absent for a specified period of time
- Additional assistance during periods of abnormal or peak workloads
- Assistance with special projects
- Seasonal work
AU student employees are not eligible for TES.
Essential Functions- Plans, implements, and evaluates short‑ and long‑term goals to support the psychosocial and developmental needs of pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Works with the multidisciplinary team to provide education to patients and families and to formulate and implement a plan of care.
- Collaborates with appropriate departments when planning and implementing special activities and events that assist the patient and family with normalizing their hospital experience.
- Serves as a patient and family advocate through the philosophy of family‑centered care.
- Assists with planning, presenting and evaluating in‑service education.
- Provides education and supervision of student interns and practicum students for the Child Life Department.
- Assists with on‑boarding, application review and mentoring of new child life interns and practicum students.
- Works well within a multidisciplinary team and independently.
- Possesses exceptional advocacy skills to work alongside a multidisciplinary team in a community hospital‑based setting.
- Possesses written and verbal communication skills.
- Organized keeper of records.

- A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Child Life, Child Development, Human Development, Psychology, or a closely related field.
- Completion of a child life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist is required.
- The candidate must meet requirements set forth for certification by the Association of Child Life Professionals Certifying Commission.
Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Preference is given to applicants who are certified upon application submission. - The individual must demonstrate extensive knowledge and skill regarding child and adolescent development and appropriate interventions for children age neonate to young adult.
