JOB TITLE:

Building Engineer – Opelika High School RESPONSIBLE TO:
Principal

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Demonstrate effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Strong professionalism, dependability, and dedication to maintaining school standards.
  • Managerial skills preferred, but not required
  • General maintenance knowledge or trade skills (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, etc.) preferred, but not required.
  • Must be insurable under the district’s vehicle policy, able to pass a background check and drug screening.
Job Goal

To assist in the maintenance of the physical facility that will provide for a safe, clean, and habitable environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise Custodial Staff
  • Provide daily oversight and direction to custodial team members.
  • Monitor performance to ensure all work meets district and school cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Offer coaching, feedback, and support to maintain high-quality facility care.
  • Maintain Building and Grounds
  • Perform custodial duties to ensure the campus is clean, safe, and well-maintained at all times.
  • Coordinate with custodial staff to address maintenance needs promptly.
  • Communicate regularly with landscaping, waste management (ESG), and other service providers to ensure proper upkeep of grounds and facilities.
  • Oversee the functionality of buildings systems, including lighting, restrooms, HVAC, and security systems.
  • Evaluate Custodial Staff Performance
  • Conduct regular meetings and performance evaluations for custodial team members.
  • Review schedules and task assignments to ensure all duties are completed effectively and efficiently.
  • Organize and Implement Maintenance Schedules
  • This position requires flexibility and will include period evening, early morning, and weekend hours based on operational needs.
  • Develop and manage daily, weekly, and seasonal maintenance schedules.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal, Activities Director, and Athletic Director to plan for upcoming events and facility needs.
  • Prioritize maintenance tasks to minimize disruption to school operations.
  • Coordinate with Outside Contractors and Service Providers
  • Serve as the on-site contact for external vendors, contractors, and maintenance personnel.
  • Communicate and schedule services for construction, pest control, lawn care, security, and other facility-related needs.
  • Ensure all external work aligns with school safety and operational standards.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal.
