Job Title: Special Education Teacher
Reports To: School Principal or Designee
Job Goal: To implement an effective educational program for the designated grade level and subject area(s) using the designated course of study, appropriate materials and resources, and best instructional practices
Qualifications- Holds or able to acquire a valid teaching certificate in Alabama with proper endorsement in special education
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned duties or responsibilities
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable
- Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
- Administer educational achievement tests to assess students' levels of competencies and needs
- Assess students' needs in transition and related services
- Schedule annual IEP meetings
- Coordinate and assist in the development of an IEP designed to meet related services, educational and transitional needs of the student through the establishment of goals, objectives and timelines
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of the students
- Monitor student participation in regular education programs, by remediation materials upon request
- Actively participates in Eligibility and Level One Due Process IEP meetings and complete form relevant to input on students discussed at the meetings
- Evaluate the educational program and student progress according to the IEP
- Attend workshops, conferences and/or conventions related to special education services to maintain growth in professional development and meet state certification guidelines
- Maintain appropriate records according to guidelines and submit reports as required
- Establish and maintain a standard of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere
- Maintain open lines of communication with students, support agencies, and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of students
- Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and the development of curriculum
- Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have LD students in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff, and assisting the student with regular class assignments
- Assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique social, psychological, or disciplinary problems of each student
- Maintain IEP records, attendance records, and all other required records pertinent to the LD program for local, state, and federal reporting
- Evaluate, select, requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records
- Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district
- Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives
- Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances
- Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration
- Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested
- Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning
- Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of in-service hours
- Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
- Supports and complies with school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor(s)
Terms of Employment/Salary: 9, 10, or 12 months as assigned / To be determined, commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified/Classified Personnel.
