Job Title: School Nurse
Reports to: School Principal or Designee
Job Goal: To provide health services to students in assigned schools following federal and state laws and local school board policies.
Qualifications- Must be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Alabama
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Minimum of one year experience in hospital or community health setting
- Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or school information
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable
- Direct the school Health Office in its daily functions for Orange Beach City Schools in compliance with federal and state regulations and local board policies
- Responsible for ensuring compliance of all student records, developing and implementing procedures, and identifying areas of improvement to the care of students
- Honors and maintains code of confidentiality with students and families within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of health and education
- Administer medications according to the Alabama Board of Nursing medication curriculum
- Establish and maintain records of all visits and dispensed medication
- Maintain the Health Office, including keeping the treatment rooms hygienic and comfortable, well-stocked and with excellent supervision of students
- Ensure that all student health records are current and each student has the proper exams and vaccinations
- Organize the coordination of first aid training across staff
- Review the Health assessment record and plans of all students yearly and communicate with administrative staff information about a student health plans
- Maintain the health room including safe storage of medications, records and equipment
- The practice of school nursing shall be within the scope and sequence of the Alabama administrative code and the Alabama Nurse Practice Act published by The Alabama Board of Nursing
- Demonstrates success in appropriately detecting and assessing student health problems
- Identify and appropriately respond to students who require special health services at school
- Serve to assist in emergency/crisis situations within the school and school system
- Serve as a resource person upon request at school or community meetings (such Disaster Relief, Pandemic Flu, etc.)
- Maintain open communication with students, families, faculty, and staff members, school administration and the community
- Maintain health records according to Alabama State Department of Education recommendations
- Review off campus trip form to determine the need for a nurse or medication assistant with school-sponsored events off campus
- Obtain, at a minimum, the contact hours in nursing continuing education to maintain a current Alabama nursing license
- Use effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
- Types and enters data, organizes and retrieves files, prepares and submits reports, handles correspondence as assigned
- Assesses and manages all communicable health problems in the school population to include but limited to influenza, chickenpox, head lice, scabies, and impetigo
- Report communicable diseases to Baldwin County and Alabama State Department of Health
- Implement and/or supervise health program activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma and scoliosis screening, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow-up
- Maintain student immunization records according to state immunization laws
- Develop, implement, and periodically evaluate medical waste management plans
- Assist in the preparation of State Department of Education reports and other reports as required
- Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor(s)
Terms of Employment: 9 month (187 Days)
EvaluationPerformance to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
