Job Summary
Under immediate direction this person completes all necessary reports. Processes and releases prisoner’s from jail. Completes bond forms, and insures that all prisoners are fed, bathed and exercised daily. Enforces all Departmental Policies designated by the Chief of Police pertaining to jail. Perform other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or his designee.

Essential functionsDuties- Insures that prisoners clean cells.
- Insures that prisoners are fed daily.
- Insures that prisoners shower daily and receive exercise period.
- Insures that prisoners are transported to medical facilities as needed.
- Dispenses all medications that have been prescribed
- Performs spot inspections of the jail for cleanliness, contraband and security.
- Fingerprint and photograph prisoners as needed.
- Processes and releases prisoners.
- Completes arrest reports, bond forms, fingerprint cards and daily jail records as required.
- Supervises jail trustees
- Types furlough and work release forms for trustees as directed.
- Maintain and inspect all security systems on a daily basis.
- Report any equipment that is faulty or signs of excessive wear.
- Change all security tapes as needed and maintains tape files.
- Reports for duty in a clean uniform.
- Maintains good public relations.
- Attends various training classes related to duties.
- Read journals and other printed materials to stay abreast of new trends, tactics and methods of jail operation.
- Completes all necessary reports to department standards.
Skills and Abilities
- Verbal skills to communicate factual information to co-workers, supervisors, general public, court personnel and inmates.
- Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete routine forms and reports.
- Reading skills to understand professional publications, court records and complex statutes and
- Skills in basic math to complete inventories and monthly reports.
- Listening skills to receive dispatched calls and take complaints.
- Knowledge of the city, its buildings and road system.
- Knowledge of city, state and federal laws and court procedures.
- Knowledge of city and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently without close supervision.
- See well enough to read print without error and operate a vehicle.
- Willing to work overtime, non-standard hours, weekends and holidays.
- Willing to travel.
- Submit to drug screening test or tests, as directed.
- Strength and mobility to deal with rowdy and unruly prisoners.
- Possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Speak well enough to address groups of two or more and to testify in court and to be understood on the radio and telephone.
- Possess a High School diploma or its equivalent.
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself or others against physical attack
Work environmentThe work involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around animals. Employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear.
