Work Hours:
Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.;
Overtime and non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays, are required.
Pay Rate: $17.00 – $20.32 per hour – Based on Qualifications.
Job Summary
Under direct supervision, the Equipment Operator I provides skilled operational support for the maintenance of City grounds, rights‑of‑way, and facilities. The position operates a variety of small to medium equipment and City vehicles and performs general maintenance and manual labor tasks to support safe, clean, and well‑maintained public spaces. The Equipment Operator I assists multiple departments as needed and performs assigned duties in accordance with City policies, safety standards, and operational procedures.
EssentialFunctions / Duties And Responsibilities
- Operates lawn mowers, front‑deck mowers, tractors, weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, and other landscaping and maintenance equipment.
- Operates tractors with attachments such as box blades, discs, and sprayers.
- Drives and operates City vehicles including pickup trucks, flatbed trucks, and bucket trucks.
- Performs daily inspections of equipment and vehicles, including checking fluid levels, belts, batteries, tires, and safety components.
- Cleans, fuels, and performs routine maintenance on equipment, tools, and department shop areas.
- Maintains landscaped areas by cutting grass and weeds, trimming trees and shrubs, planting flowerbeds, and applying pest treatments.
- Performs maintenance work across City properties including parks, rights‑of‑way, City Hall, fire and police stations, library, recreation facilities, community centers, and golf facilities.
- Trims limbs, distribute materials along rights‑of‑way, and assist with street, drainage, and infrastructure‑related work as needed.
- Performs manual labor including digging holes, moving dirt, lifting materials, and assisting with the installation, repair, or maintenance of infrastructure components such as pipe or signage.
- Follows all City safety rules, policies, and procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identifies and reports unsafe conditions, hazards, or equipment malfunctions to a supervisor.
- Provides operational support to other departments or work areas as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or related work experience.
- Current and valid Driver’s License.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and non‑standard hours as needed.
- Ability to perform related duties as required.
This position requires frequent physical exertion including standing, walking on uneven terrain, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, and lifting heavy objects (often over 50 pounds). The work requires agility, strength, and endurance. The work involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, moving machinery, traffic, noise, and chemicals. Employees must wear appropriate PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, safety shoes, and other protective gear as required.
Uniforms may be provided for certain operations.
