Position: Attendant - Recreation Facility (Sail Camp Instructor)

8 am - 5 pm (Monday - Friday)

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Team Leader, the Recreation Facility Attendant/Sail Camp Instructor is responsible for the safe operation of the City’s youth sailing programs. The employee will assist with the instruction of the City’s sailing programs and help maintain buildings, vessels, and equipment by performing routine and general maintenance. Sail Camp Instructors are responsible for ensuring the safety of all program participants and the program's overall quality.

Customer service and parental interaction are part of this position’s daily routine. Sail Camp Instructors are employed to perform any other assigned duties when not actively serving in the role of a Sail Camp Instructor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in the instruction of sailing programs.
  • Supervises program participants and ensure their safety.
  • Inspects all equipment daily and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.

  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Maintains a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
  • Provides responsible, appropriate, and satisfactory leadership within the City.

  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies.
  • Complies with City wide and departmental policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Ensures the positive promotion of the City.
  • Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Reading skills to understand laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the operations of the department and facilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents.
  • Math skills to perform basic math to maintain financial and activity records.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding, surveillance, and rescue techniques.
  • Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete forms and reports.
  • Knowledge of City and departmental policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Supervisory skills to give clear and concise instructions to participants.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to rig, safely sail, and derig small dinghy boats (Optimists, Sunfish, and Club
    420 fleets).
  • Ability to swim 50 yards while wearing a USCG Type III PFD, close-toed shoes, and clothing.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED

    QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled in an academic program to complete or earn the equivalent
  • A current and valid Driver’s License with Vessel endorsement.
  • Must have the ability to travel to attend conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  • Must have the ability to work overtime, weekends, and other nonstandard hours.
  • Possess Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Adult, Infant, and Child-First Aid Certification.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience as Sailing Instructor; experience as Head Sailing Instructor preferred.
  • Possess US Sailing Instructor Certification or equivalent preferred.
