Position: Aquatic Center Lifeguard (FT)

AQUATIC CENTER LIFEGUARD (FULL TIME)

Work Hours:

8 am - 4 pm OR 11 am - 7 pm (M-F - Some weekends)

JOB SUMMARY

Lifeguards ensure the safety and well‑being of all patrons at the aquatic facility, which operates year‑round for recreational swimming, lap swimming, and special programs. Lifeguards actively prevent and respond to emergencies, enforce facility rules, and maintain a clean and safe environment. When not performing lifeguarding duties, employees assist with additional tasks that support daily facility operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, and safety regulations.
  • Conducts daily inspections of the pool, equipment, and facility; report hazards, safety concerns, or maintenance needs.
  • Ensures all safety and rescue equipment is properly positioned and fully operational.
  • Makes safety‑related decisions regarding health concerns, intoxication, and improper attire in accordance with facility policy.
  • Reports accidents, incidents, complaints, and facility issues to the Aquatics Coordinator or Aquatics Director.
  • Completes accurate records, reports, and incident documentation.
  • Monitors water quality, chemical levels, and filtration systems to ensure compliance with health standards.
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings and in‑service training sessions.
  • Maintains a professional, courteous, and positive relationship with patrons and coworkers.
  • Secures facility gates and doors during opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists with swim lessons in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
  • Operates computerized membership and facility management systems.
  • Meets daily swimming requirements (minimum of 1,000 yards per day).

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Vigilance and Alertness:
    Maintain constant attentiveness and observation of the pool area; identify potential hazards, recognize swimmers in distress, and make quick, sound decisions during emergencies.
  • Swimming, Physical Fitness, and Rescue

    Skills:

    Demonstrate strong swimming ability, endurance, and physical strength to perform rescues, assist distressed swimmers, and remove individuals from the water when necessary.
  • Emergency Response:
    Understand and follow emergency action plans; perform CPR, first aid, and other lifesaving techniques; and coordinate with emergency medical services as required.
  • Sun and Heat Exposure Awareness:
    Work for extended periods in the sun; recognize signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration; and monitor patrons for heat‑related concerns.
  • Endurance and Postural Demands:
    Stand, sit, or remain stationed in one position for extended periods, often in hot, cold, or humid conditions.
  • Manual Dexterity and Coordination:
    Operate pool equipment, handle rescue devices, and use first‑aid supplies efficiently and safely.
  • Policies, Procedures, and Facility Knowledge:
    Understand and apply facility rules, policies, and procedures; clearly communicate safety expectations to patrons.
  • Facility Systems and Water Chemistry:
    Maintain knowledge of pool systems, including water chemistry, chemical handling, sanitation, filtration, and water clarity maintenance.
  • Professional Proficiency:
    Consistently apply lifeguarding principles, safety techniques, and emergency procedures to protect the health and safety of patrons and staff.
