8 am - 5 pm (Monday - Friday) May - August

Job Summary

Under general direction, this Team Leader is responsible for the successful operation of the City’s sailing programs. The Team Leader will also assist with the planning, coordination, and operation of the City’s sailing program. Supervises seasonal part-time sailing program staff and ensures the overall safety of the sailing program. Conducts routine maintenance of sailing equipment and facilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervisors seasonal sail camp staff.

Essential Functions / Duties and Responsibilities

Plans and leads sailing programs.

Compiles and maintains records, such as attendance, financial, and accident reports.

Assists and co-leads training of staff in sailing programs.

Maintains the inventory of related equipment and supplies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Reading skills to understand laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the operation of the department, and facilities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, and the general public.

Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents.

Math skills to perform basic math to maintain financial and activity records.

Computer skills to prepare reports.

Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete forms and reports.

Knowledge of City and departmental policies, rules, and procedures.

Supervisory skills to give clear and concise instructions to staff.

Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies.

Knowledge of and ability to rig, safely sail, and derig small dinghy boats (Optimists, Sunfish, and Club
420 fleets) and effectively teach sailing skills and concepts to youth and adults.

Ability to swim 50 yards while wearing USCG Type III PFD, close-toed shoes, and clothing.

Required Qualifications

A High School diploma or equivalent experience preferred.

A current and valid Driver’s License with Vessel endorsement.

Must have the ability to travel to attend conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Must have the ability to work overtime, weekends, and other nonstandard hours.

Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Current Adult, Infant and Child First Aid certification.

Current US Center for Safe Sport’s Safe Sport training certification.

Current CDC Heads Up youth sports training certification.

Current U.S. Sailing Small Boat Instructor Certification or the ability to obtain certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as Sailing Instructor; experience as Head Sailing Instructor preferred.

The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions. Employees may be required to work outside in extreme conditions.
