Consistency, thoroughness, passion, and craftsmanship are the fundamentals on which we have built SPMD. Our team has decades of experience in design, multidisciplinary production, artisanal craftsmanship, and fabrication.
We design, curate, build, and install bespoke elements including large-scale art installations, environmental graphics, way finding systems, experiential moments, exhibits, and public activations. Working directly with clients, architects, and interior designers, we bring to life the art and design that enhances traditional architectural scope.
POSITION SUMMARYWe are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Designer to join our team. Positioned as a key creative engine within the studio, this role is for a designer who has mastered their craft and is ready to take on greater project ownership.
You are a versatile "maker" and "thinker" who can bridge the gap between high-level concept and technical execution. Reporting to the Design Director, you will lead the design development of complex projects, ensuring that our output remains innovative, buildable, and aesthetically exceptional. You’ll be the bridge between our junior staff and senior leadership, providing guidance while staying deeply "hands-on" with the work.
DesignExecution & Creative Ownership
- Lead the design of bespoke elements across environmental graphics, way finding, and spatial installations.
- Translate complex briefs into cohesive visual narratives and high-fidelity design concepts.
- Execute expert-level design work in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.
- Utilize 3D modeling (preferably Rhino) to visualize concepts and solve spatial challenges - a bonus.
- Build compelling, story-driven presentation decks in Google Slides that clearly articulate design intent.
- Manage the day-to-day design workflow for multiple concurrent projects.
- Mentor junior and mid-level designers, providing constructive feedback and technical guidance.
- Collaborate closely with project managers and fabricators to ensure designs are feasible and stay within budget/timeline.
- Review and refine design packages to ensure they are "production-ready."
- Present design concepts to clients with clarity, confidence, and passion.
- Attend site visits and project meetings, acting as a reliable representative of the SPMD design vision.
- Coordinate with external partners, including architects, engineers, and lighting designers, to integrate our work seamlessly into the built environment.
- Strong background in environmental graphic design, or experiential design.
- Firm grasp of material properties, fabrication methods, and how 2D graphics translate into 3D space.
- Working knowledge of ADA requirements, ergonomics, and universal design principles.
- Ability to interpret architectural floor plans, elevations, and sections.
- Proficiency in Rhino is a significant plus, specifically for spatial visualization and preparing files for fabrication.
- Exceptional ability to communicate ideas through sketching, mood boarding, and rapid prototyping.
- A "systems-thinking" approach to design, especially regarding way finding and complex graphics.
- Strong typographic skills and an eye for architectural integration.
- Proven ability to manage the creative process from concept through to design intent drawings.
- Organized and self-disciplined; able to pivot between multiple projects without losing attention to detail.
- A proactive problem-solver who anticipates hurdles in the production phase.
- Bachelors in Graphic Design, Architecture, or a related field.
- 4–8+ years of experience in a professional design studio (specifically within EGD or experiential realms).
- Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience with Rhino or similar 3D modeling software a bonus but not required.
- In-house 3–5 days per week in our collaborative studio environment.
- Work closely with the Design Director and Associate Design Director to elevate the studio's creative output.
- Exposure to a diverse portfolio of high-end corporate, hospitality, and public art projects.
- Salary range based on ability and experience level.
- Occasional travel for site surveys and installation supervision.
- Normal office temperature-controlled conditions with quiet to moderate noise level and little to no exposure to heat, dust, or fumes. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain in a stationary position working at a desk; operate a computer and other office machinery including printer, copier, and telephone; move about inside the office to access office machinery;
exchange information with coworkers; and may need to lift or move up to 10 pounds.
Salary Range based on experience: $80K - $105K
