About The Role

This Prison Chaplain position provides emotional and pastoral support to prison inmates of all backgrounds and beliefs, as well as prison staff and the families and friends of inmates. This is a permanent role based at Wellington Correctional Centre.

The successful applicant will be compassionate and resilient, with significant pastoral experience and capacity to work in a correctional centre environment. You must be motivated and caring with demonstrated competence in pastoral ministry (ideally in a Justice context) or be keen to develop ability to minister to inmates in prison.

You will communicate the Christian message clearly through conversations, Bible study and chapel services. You will work with Correctional Services Chaplains of other denominations and faiths, build relationships with local churches and Christian ministries, be part of the Anglicare Justice Chaplaincy team and report to the Justice & Community Chaplaincy Manager. You must pass all Corrective Services security checks and meet the requirements to be licensed by the Archbishop for ministry in the Diocese of Bathurst.

Responsibilities
  • Provide emotional and pastoral support to inmates, prison staff and families and friends of inmates.
  • Collaborate with chaplains of other denominations and faiths; support local churches and Christian ministry organisations.
  • Deliver and participate in chapel services, Bible studies, conversations, and other ministry activities.
  • Maintain safety and security compliance as required by Corrective Services.
Skills, Knowledge And Experience
  • Ordained Minister of the Anglican Church of Australia, licensed within the Diocese of Bathurst or eligible to be licensed by the Archbishop, or a layperson with a minimum of a three-year tertiary qualification in theology/ministry eligible to be licensed by the Archbishop of Sydney.
  • Preferred minimum of five years ministry experience in a parish or chaplaincy setting.
  • Demonstrated competence and experience in pastoral ministry with a range of individuals.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team and autonomously.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work harmoniously with others.
  • A personal commitment to growth in the Christian faith.
  • Current and valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel.
