Tax Manager – Talley LLP
Location:
Orange, California (Hybrid)
- Understand and apply best practices for the firm’s tax preparation, review, and planning software to improve efficiencies.
- Review the firm’s complex returns.
- Assist partners and client service managers in managing tax relationships for complex clients.
- Serve as point of contact and relationship manager/CSM for designated individuals and small businesses.
- Demonstrate advanced technical expertise (e.g., subchapter K, industry expertise such as restaurant).
- Participate in the tax onboarding and training program when appropriate.
- Manage a client load of appropriate assignments efficiently.
- Maintain responsibility for agreed‑upon process improvement initiatives.
The role blends production (tax compliance, planning, project management) with client service (relationship management, advisory). The candidate should prioritize one component while maintaining competence in the other.

- Ability to manage complex client relationships, structures, and transactions
- Review of complicated returns (entity, individual, multistate, consolidated, foreign bank reporting)
- Identify issues, explain opportunities, and implement planning strategies
- Recognized technical expertise in a tax subject area or industry
- Develop and expand a personal network of client relationships and referral sources, with proactive contact management.
- Actively market and sell to new and current clients, emphasizing existing clients, identifying tax and business issues, integrating firm services, and cultivating referral relationships.
- Initiate a marketing program to promote subject‑matter expertise.
- Maintain agreed‑upon marketing metrics.
- Oversee tax services for small‑business, professional, and individual clients (fee negotiation, client‑service issue resolution).
- Act as key team member on larger clients with a Partner or Client Service Manager.
- Oversee meetings and extended services for existing clients.
- Project‑manage tax services to clients.
- Apply business knowledge to resolve engagement issues and add value.
- Coordinate client work and staff scheduling.
- Oversee department BSC management areas: workflow, scheduling, training, onboarding.
- Develop and oversee new services for clients.
- Manage department‑related projects.
- Keep firm members informed of tax changes.
- With the Tax Department Partner, develop key initiatives, indicators, and implement plans to achieve objectives.
- Mentor and provide BSC responsibilities for up to 2–4 staff.
- Assist in onboarding new staff using the onboarding training matrix.
- Assist in training and learning programs for department team members.
- Demonstrate interest in the growth of others and refine people‑management skills.
- Delegate, provide timely performance feedback, and offer encouragement during monthly BSC check‑in meetings.
- Provide on‑the‑job training and supervision for new staff on engagements.
- Promote teamwork and cooperation among all team members.
- Motivate team members and coordinate efforts with peers and client personnel.
- Allocate 50% of CPE to non‑technical items (firm management, marketing, leadership).
- Develop excellent communication skills.
- Continue personal growth by preparing development plans and meeting firm and professional education requirements.
- Build professional relationships with clients, firm members, departments, and peer groups.
