Hazardous Waste Lab Technician
Location: Orange, CA
Compensation: $18 – $23 per hour
Schedule: Monday – Friday; 9:00AM – 5:30PM
Responsibilities- Collect hazardous waste from laboratory departments and satellite accumulation areas.
- Transport waste to central accumulation areas following established procedures.
- Verify containers are properly closed, labeled, and in good condition.
- Ensure proper segregation based on predefined compatibility and classification guidelines.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of waste storage areas.
- Prepare waste containers for shipment, including container selection, labeling, and staging.
- Perform routine waste treatment activities, including neutralization of waste streams, in accordance with established procedures and EHS direction.
- Assist with waste consolidation activities following predefined processes.
- Support scheduling and coordination of waste pickups.
- Maintain accurate documentation related to waste handling and disposal activities.
- Identify and isolate non‑standard materials without processing; exsolve to EHS.
- Maintain waste inventory and tracking logs; monitor volumes and report capacity issues.
- Follow all OSHA, EPA, site‑specific, local and site hazardous waste procedures.
- Use PPE, comply with safe handling practices and participate in required safety programs.
- Support readiness of waste areas for inspections and audits.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures and work safely with hazardous materials.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to perform physical tasks in a laboratory and industrial environment.
- Ability to wear a respirator and comply with respiratory protection program requirements.
- Experience in laboratory, manufacturing, or waste handling environment (preferred).
- Familiarity with hazardous waste handling practices (RCRA awareness) (preferred).
- Experience handling chemicals or regulated materials (preferred).
- Reliable and consistent in task execution.
- Strong hazard awareness and safe work practices.
- Ability to work independently on routine routes and communicate issues clearly.
The role requires routine use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses/goggles/face shield, lab coat or other protective clothing, and additional chemical protective equipment as required. Must be able to wear and work in a respirator. Ability to lift and handle materials individually up to 50lbs, including 5‑gallon containers and handling movement of 55‑gallon drums using appropriate equipment. Perform frequent walking, standing, bending, and working in laboratory and waste storage environments.
May be exposed to chemical hazards under controlled and regulated conditions.
All hazardous waste handling, treatment, and disposal activities are performed under the technical direction and guidance of EHS, including waste segregation, neutralization, and handling procedures. Technically supervised by EHS.
