Per Diem Nurse - Cardiac Care ICU

Position Summary

The cardiothoracic experienced clinical nurse will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement a plan of care for critical care patients, ensuring coordination of care between other disciplines and support staff. As needed, the nurse will be assigned specifically to care for cardiothoracic surgery patients. The role includes performing professional nursing duties that incorporate the psychomotor and age‑appropriate cognitive skills of the patient/family/significant other to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for the patient on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care.

The nurse will evaluate patient outcomes, the effectiveness of the plan of care, and readiness for discharge, revising plans or making referrals as necessary. The position also requires acting as a role model and mentor to students and nurses new to the unit and functioning as a Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) as requested by the supervisor/manager.

• Recovery of open‑heart cardiovascular surgery patient
• Minimum of 2 years recent ICU nursing experience or completion of a 6‑month orientation in this specific ICU
• Minimum of 1 year recent experience caring for cardiothoracic surgery patients
• Experience with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP), Impella, left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
• All external candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
• Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a fast‑paced, constantly changing environment
• Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload

• Understanding of applicable regulatory requirements
• Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
