Your Role on the Team

The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Urology requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various divisions of the Department of Urology.

Duties include assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the urology services, participating in inpatient sign‑out at the beginning and end of shift, following up with the Urology teams, residents, and attending physicians, performing surgical consultations on potential urology surgery patients, and managing the care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.) and follow‑up.

The NP also obtains consults as needed, discharges patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications), triages phone calls, reviews critical labs and follow‑ups on results with patient and medical staff, obtains comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and explores patients’ interpretation of health needs.

Under the joint supervision of the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and the Urology Medical Directors and guided by applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.

Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice
  • Functions as appropriate to the scope of practice, including management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedure; familiarity with state statutes for licenses is necessary.
  • Approved privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include all privileges.
  • The NP professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all health‑licensed settings and affiliates.
  • The NP has responsibility for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidences self‑direction and accountability for quality of care and development of their role within all health locations and affiliates.
  • Advanced Practice Practitioners are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through medical staff to function in the clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
  • The NP is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.
What It Takes to be Successful Required
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges before hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to workload.
