Job Overview

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will perform all duties and tasks under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist. The position may involve the following shifts: 6:30 AM–7:00 PM; 9:00 AM–9:30 PM; 11:00 AM–11:30 PM, including weekends and holidays, and will be assigned to various operating rooms and specialties, including OB as needed. Worksite location will be both the Orange and Irvine campuses.

Your Role on the Team

Under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, provide safe anesthesia care, including: pre‑operative assessment, writing of appropriate pre‑op orders as specified by approved standard procedure, administration of all types of anesthetic and techniques, patient monitoring intra‑operatively, ensuring a safe intra‑op course and emergence, and assisting as necessary in post‑operative care.

What It Takes to be Successful
  • Skills in pre‑operative assessment of surgical patients, including identification of pre‑existing disease entities and their effect on anesthesia care.
  • Understanding of interactions between pre‑operative drug therapy and the planned anesthetic agents for all age groups.
  • Ability to determine patient need for various monitoring modalities and to safely insert venous and arterial monitoring lines under medical direction.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology, dosage, side effects and contraindications of all drugs currently employed in anesthesia practice.
  • Proficiency in monitored, regional and general anesthesia techniques for all age categories.
  • Ability to recognize and treat adverse effects of anesthesia, and to initiate emergency treatment while informing the attending anesthesiologist.
  • Understanding of cardiac, respiratory, neuro, endocrine and renal physiology as they relate to intra‑operative events.
  • Skill in airway management techniques, including safe insertion of nasal and oral airways and endotracheal intubation.
  • Ability to recognize return of consciousness and reflexes signaling safe emergence from anesthesia, and to transport the patient to recovery bed with appropriate handover.
  • Ability to assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency situations, including airway management and monitoring line insertion under anesthesiologist direction.
  • Experience performing selected educational supervisory and administrative tasks, including supervision of student anesthetists when assigned.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia.
  • California RN and Nurse Anesthetist License.
  • ACLS Certification.
  • AANA Certification.
