Position: Nurse Practitioner II, Trauma (Swing Shift)

Your Role on the Team

The Nurse Practitioner II – Trauma Service (Swing Shift) in the Department of Surgery is responsible for the management and coordination of inpatient trauma care for adult and adolescent patients (ages 14 and older). The NP supports the Trauma Service during swing‑shift hours and focuses on clinical management, care coordination, discharge facilitation, procedural support, and acute clinical response. Duties include comprehensive assessments, care planning, and evaluation of trauma patients on the inpatient trauma service and in the surgical intensive care unit.

The NP participates in structured inpatient sign‑out, collaborates closely with trauma surgeons, residents, nursing staff, case management, social work, and ancillary services, and responds to rapid‑response activations and trauma resuscitations. The NP performs bedside procedures such as chest tube removal, wound VAC changes, complex dressing changes, drain removal, laceration repairs, and tracheostomy downsizing or removal within approved privileges. The NP also manages discharge planning and throughput, coordinates durable medical equipment, home health services, discharge medications, and removes barriers to safe discharge.

The NP reviews critical labs, performs tertiary examinations, prepares progress notes, and maintains accurate charting in the electronic medical record.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships across the UCI Health System.
  • Exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, and other personnel.
  • Demonstrate strong customer‑service skills.
  • Communicate medical information clearly in person and over the phone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Write clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
  • Be trained in specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for PHI.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • ATLS certification within six months of hire.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems, preferably Epic.
  • Familiarity with UC policies, procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
  • Experience in trauma, acute‑care surgery, critical care, or emergency medicine.
  • Experience with inpatient discharge planning, care coordination, and throughput initiatives.
