Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation’s top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs.
It’s located in one of the world’s safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County’s second‑largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide.
The UC Irvine Police Department provides public safety and law enforcement services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the UCI campus and properties and the UCI Health Network, which includes UCI Health Orange, UCI Health Irvine, UCI Health Fountain Valley, UCI Health Lakewood, UCI Health Los Alamitos, UCI Health Placentia‑Linda, and designated UCI Health clinics.
The Police Department’s Health Division uses a hybrid model that includes Police Officers, Public Safety Ambassadors, Public Safety Responders, Public Safety Supervisors, Security Supervisors, and other professional staff members who work together to safeguard the lives and property of the University and its patients, visitors, faculty, staff, and students at the various UCI sites.
Public Safety RespondersPublic Safety Responders are frequently the first contact the public may have when seeking assistance or requesting services at any UCI location. They provide information, directions, and general assistance, patrol and respond to calls for service at the various UCI properties, respond to emergencies like disturbances or medical crises, monitor suspicious activity, provide escorts, and assist with the de‑escalation of violent situations.
In the Health setting, they are a direct patient‑facing position often found in the emergency department and various clinical settings. They provide patient, visitor and staff escorts and essentially act as a security and safety presence within the healthcare facilities. Public Safety Responders assist in placing persons in restraints, write reports, and monitor patients as needed. They also staff and monitor security systems, including cameras, monitors and alarms.
Public Safety Responders are expected to conduct themselves professionally and ethically while enforcing UCI and UCI Health policies and procedures. Duties may include working assigned posts, conducting foot, bike, and vehicle patrols, providing excellent customer service to patients, visitors, students, faculty and staff, performing visitor control, de‑escalating and intervening in combative situations, staffing the Public Safety Operations Center (PSOC) and providing real‑time intelligence through alarms, radios, cameras, and direct observation to the Health Division.
