The base salary for this position is dependent upon experience and location ranging from $84,200 to $109,500

Protection and Control (P&C) engineering is the discipline of designing systems that monitor the power system, detect abnormal conditions, and automatically isolate faults. The Philosophy and Standards group researches industry best practices to create P&C standards, develops new engineering processes and tools, evaluates new P&C technologies, and writes industry white papers. System scope includes transmission, substation, and distribution. Service companies include Central Maine Power, New York State Electric & Gas, Rochester Gas & Electric, and United Illuminating.
Key Responsibilities- General responsibilities include assisting in the development of P&C engineering standards, relay setting file templates, and engineering tools.
- The position conducts engineering analysis, researches industry papers and manuals, participates in engineering discussions, authors engineering standards, and presents to technical and non-technical audiences.
- The engineer may also participate in the evaluation of new vendors and technologies.
- Engineers in the Philosophy and Standards group often are requested to work on special one-off projects. Past examples include overhauling arc flash calculation methods, evaluating the feasibility of distribution switching stations, and evaluating new substation designs.
- Active projects include engineering AVANGRID’s first IEC 61850 Process Bus Substation, evaluating Virtualized Protection Relays, conducting research into protection design, updating engineering standards, creating internal engineering training courses, and writing industry papers.
- This is a second level engineer position (one level above entry level).
- 2 years of experience in Electrical Engineering.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
- An intuitive understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals is required, including transformer basics, reactive power, power flow, electrical losses, and digital logic.
- Experience in electric utilities preferred, particularly in protection and control or testing and commissioning of substations.
- A strong understanding of Protection and Control fundamentals, including sequential components, per unit, and fault analysis.
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering preferred.
