Overview

The Yale School of Nursing Center for Aging Well seeks an experienced Senior Scientific Research Writer to provide high-level scientific writing, grant development, and research program support during the Center’s start-up phase. Reporting to the Center Associate Director, this position will work collaboratively with faculty, investigators, and strategic partners to advance the Center’s research portfolio, establish foundational research infrastructure, and support development of competitive external funding proposals.

This project appointment is intended to provide concentrated scientific writing and research development expertise during the Center’s formative period. The position will focus on establishing competitive research infrastructure, expanding grant activity, increasing scholarly productivity, and positioning the Center for sustainable externally funded research programs.

Six-Month Fixed-Duration (Project) Appointment

This position is intended to accelerate the Center’s initial growth and establish processes that support long-term research sustainability.

This is a six-month fixed‑duration project appointment established to support the initial development of the Yale School of Nursing Center for Aging Well.

The appointment has a defined end date at the time of hire. Continuation beyond the initial appointment is not guaranteed and will be evaluated based upon:

  • Strategic priorities of the Center.
  • Operational needs.
  • Successful development of sustainable funding streams.
  • Availability of future funding.

Any continuation or establishment of a longer‑term position will require separate review and approval.

Required

Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive experience in scientific writing, research development, or scholarly communications in an academic or health sciences setting.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to successful extramural grant applications and peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Exceptional written communication skills and ability to synthesize complex scientific information.
  • Familiarity with NIH and other federal funding mechanisms and academic publishing standards.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Preferred Experience and Education
  • Doctoral degree in nursing, public health, biomedical sciences, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working in a school of nursing, academic medical center, or research‑intensive university.
  • Familiarity with research areas relevant to YSN priorities, including aging, dementia, mental health, health equity, or implementation science.
  • Proven experience supporting multi‑investigator or center‑level research initiatives.
  • Proven experience mentoring or advising faculty on scientific writing or grant development.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Strategy development and execution working with collaborators within and outside of the University. Working with leadership to develop and implement a strategic vision and work plans.
  • Recommend structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives.
  • Advise leadership on a broad range of strategic, development, and communications issues related to research and policy development opportunities.
  • Manage ongoing partnerships with local, state, national, and non‑governmental organizations focused on health research, policy development and implementation.
  • Identify new opportunities for expanding the program within Yale and among other academic and non‑academic organizations locally and nationally.
  • Seek external funding opportunities and assist with the submission of grant proposals.
