Scaffold Builder Journeyman - Austin Industrial

Austin Industrial is a merit shop, employee‑owned company and has been a provider of construction, maintenance, plant services, turnaround and specialty services to the oil, gas and chemical, energy (power and ethanol), and manufacturing industries for more than 60 years.

Scaffold Builder Journeyman

This person will construct, assemble, maintain, and dismantle tubular scaffolding or other temporary structures. This is accomplished by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities. A minimum of 3 years of experience is required within the Scaffolding craft. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Determines type of scaffold needed.
  • Inspects job site and all scaffold material for defects and safety hazards.
  • Effectively communicates safety hazards and mitigates avoidable hazards prior to construction of scaffolding.
  • Transports tubular scaffold or other structural material and erects the scaffold to the dimensions required.
  • Hoists scaffolding materials upward in order to erect temporary structure.
  • Properly secures and levels locking sections of scaffolding material.
  • Properly secures scaffold to the permanent structure for added stability.
  • Adheres to all OSHA, site specific and Austin Industrial requirements for the erecting and navigation of the scaffolding.
  • Performs final inspection of completed scaffolding.
  • Dismantles scaffolding when it has been properly communicated to do so.
  • Inspects and properly stows scaffolding material after dismantling.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance;

stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School diploma with a certification as a lubrication technician.
  • Experience:

    3 years’ minimum experience, able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    May directly supervise 1 to 5 scaffold builder helpers in the Operations Department.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one‑one and small group situations; speak fluent English.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
