General Description
The purpose of this job is to perform limited skilled labor using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment including the operation of dump trucks, backhoes, front‑end loaders, slope mowers, flail mowers, skid steers, concrete truck, asphalt truck, road grader, gradall, tractor trailers, transport truck, track excavators, and street sweeper. May require light truck operation, a variety of light, moderately heavy, and heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of municipal streets, grounds, and other County properties as designated.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
- Performs labor needed to maintain and construct roads, bridges, drainage ditches, piping, curbing, guttering, driveways, and shoulders.
- Operates light and medium trucks, dump trucks, light mowing equipment and all other tractor‑drawn implements, earth and asphalt compaction equipment, wood chipper, and either a side‑mount boom mower, backhoe, or motor grader.
- Uses tools including shovels, pneumatic tools, hot/cold pressure washers, power tools, carpenter tools, bush knives, post‑hole diggers, power tamps, and jack hammers.
- Assists in training with motor graders, backhoes, and tractors with boom mower.
- Prepares maintenance and weekly reports as required.
- Conducts general duties including maintaining equipment and facilities, assisting in staking and grade setting of new projects.
- Provides assistance in emergency situations during after‑hours or inclement weather conditions.
- Provides professional and courteous customer service at all times to in‑house staff and the general public either by telephone, electronically, or face‑to‑face.
- Demolish houses as part of projects.
- Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Requires at least two (2) years of experience in the safe operation of light and medium trucks, dump trucks, light mowing equipment, and all other tractor‑drawn implements, earth and asphalt compaction equipment, wood chipper, and either a side‑mount boom mower, backhoe, or motor grader; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
PhysicalDemands
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; moving machinery.
- Electrical shock; heights.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Driver’s License.
