CLACKAMAS COUNTY CHILDREN'S COMMISSION HEAD START TEACHER – Supporting the growth of healthy children and families, positive parenting, and school readiness.

General Objective

Provide and coordinate education services to selected low‑income and special‑needs children. Teacher responsibilities include developing classroom curriculum, scheduling and carrying out home visits, and assisting the Education Manager with performance standards and policy compliance.

Teacher Responsibilities
  • Responsible for assigned classes of children and the number of designated home visits and parent conferences allotted per child per year.
  • Plan and evaluate daily classroom activities that are developmentally appropriate, respond to the goals set for individual children, and reflect the diversity and culture of the class.
  • Ensure that classroom and curriculum meet Program Education Component Performance Standards.
  • Assess and refer all children in the assigned class to include developmental screenings, referrals for suspected disabilities, Individual Goal Plans, and attendance at IFSP and CRM meetings.
  • Conduct assessments three times per year, consult with the Advocate and Education Manager, and make referrals as needed.
  • Collaborate with specialists and parents to ensure children with disabilities and special needs receive all recommended services, and coordinate classroom activities with specialist requirements.
  • Maintain a safe environment with continuous supervision for all children.
  • Create a developmentally appropriate environment with site education staff.
  • Follow all aspects of Bus Safety Protocols.
  • Keep classrooms, storage areas, and office space neat and clutter‑free.
  • Supply all needed materials and supplies.
  • Maintain CLASS score thresholds and achieve TS Gold Reliability.
  • Utilize PBIS in classroom practices.
  • Enter child behavior observations and online assessments accurately into the electronic database.
  • Maintain complete and accurate child files, forms, and reports within allotted timelines.
  • Include Assistant Teacher, Classroom Aide, and parent volunteers in the classroom planning process.
  • Model effective ways to guide young children through classroom activities.
  • Lead planning of monthly family nights, attend them, and complete monthly newsletters for families.
Home Visitor Responsibilities
  • Facilitate parents as the primary teacher of their own children; partner with parents in scheduling and conducting required home visits and parent conferences.
  • Provide parenting skills and child development information, guidance in choosing developmentally appropriate activities, and model age‑appropriate, constructive interactions.
  • Partner with parents to set educational goals for each child.
  • Plan and carry out individual goals in coordination with the classroom curriculum and assist parents during and between home visits.
  • Communicate classroom curriculum details to parents during home visits.
  • Coordinate and refer with the Advocate when family issues arise.
  • Team Leader:
    Direct day‑to‑day activities of the Assistant Teacher and Classroom Aide, assess performance, and deliver evaluations.

  • Familiarize with and adhere to position‑related policies and procedures as well as overarching program objectives.

Confidentiality

Respect and maintain confidentiality of information regarding enrolled children and families, personnel issues, and other program operations as appropriate.

Training

Develop professional work goals and a training plan in consultation with the supervisor; participate in training as requested.

Working Conditions

Work with physically active three‑to‑five‑year‑old children for one class period (3.5‑7.5 hours). Extensive standing and walking, moderate sitting, kneeling, and bending.
