Position Overview
The Oregon City Public Library seeks an experienced, outgoing, and compassionate Youth Services Librarian 1 to provide reference and readers‑advisory services at the Children’s Desk and to plan and deliver programs for children ages 0‑14 and families.
ResponsibilitiesCoordinate and perform professional librarian services across reference, collections, technology, outreach, public relations, programs, and services for specific populations including children, teens, adults, seniors, ESL speakers, and more.
Conduct advanced reference work and related research services; secure reference materials from other sources.
Analyze circulation activity, patron preferences, and community needs; support collection development and selection decisions.
Assist patrons in locating reading materials, providing reader’s advisory tools, holds, interlibrary loans, and online public access catalog usage; create lists of reading possibilities for topics and groups.
Conduct online searches on computer databases; teach patrons and staff how to use databases; select databases as needed.
Conduct community outreach on behalf of the library; present library services to community groups, City Commission, Library Board, and neighborhood association meetings.
Prepare brochures, email newsletters, website, social media posts, and other information about library services and events.
Design and implement programs for education, entertainment, and enrichment.
Teach use of technology and technology tools as outlined by the library.
May be responsible for displays, resolving patron emergencies, writing grant proposals, and implementing grant‑sponsored programs.
Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge and SkillsSpecialized professional knowledge of library science theory, principles, and practices; modern library procedures and processes such as automation, RFID, electronic tools; ALA values; integrated library software; computer‑aided databases; research tools; classification systems; supervisory practices; budgeting; social and education skills; excellent communication, writing, customer service, and diversity awareness.
AbilitiesPerform all duties of the position; train staff; assure organized library setting; maintain public areas; deal courteously with diverse patrons; work as team member; may work evenings and weekends.
Physical AbilitiesWork indoors; moderate activity; hearing and speech; manual dexterity for typing/computer operation; ambulatory ability; lift light to medium weight materials intermittently.
Education and ExperienceMaster’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university; post‑graduate education may substitute with special experience.
Licenses and CertificatesMust pass criminal background check.
Working ConditionsWork performed indoors.
