Pay and Benefits Information

Annual Pay Range: $64,128.88 – $81,115.31

Hourly Pay Range: $30.831194 – $38.997744

Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on a candidate's experience that is directly relevant to the position.

Job Overview

The Social Services Division’s Veterans Service Office seeks a Veterans Services Officer to counsel and assist veterans and family members with determining eligibility for benefits and obtaining veterans benefits. The role involves managing caseloads, advocating through appeals, and serving as liaison with other agencies for education, reference, and referral.

Required

Minimum Qualifications / Transferable Skills
  • Minimum one (1) year of related experience providing necessary knowledge and skills for the position
  • Documented experience conducting community outreach
  • Documented experience determining eligibility for benefits and services
  • Documented experience with social work‑related case management
Preferred Special Qualifications / Transferable Skills
  • Documented experience working with veterans, veterans benefits, and/or veteran programs and services
  • Documented experience advocating for clients through veterans claims appeals processes
  • Possess or be in process of obtaining Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs County Veteran Service Officers certification or accreditation within the last twelve months
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must pass a post‑offer, pre‑employment drug test
  • Must pass a criminal history check (may include national or state fingerprint record check)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record; driving is required for County business on a regular basis
Other Qualifications
  • Successful completion of Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs County Veteran Service Officers training certification program within one (1) year of hire
Typical Tasks Veteran Benefits Counseling, Eligibility & Claims Support
  • Interview veterans and their family members to assess needs and provide counseling regarding rights, benefits, and eligibility under federal and state laws
  • Interpret, explain, and apply applicable legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Determine eligibility for monetary and non‑monetary veterans’ benefits
  • Initiate, prepare, and submit benefits claims on behalf of veterans and family members
  • Obtain, review, and organize supporting documentation to ensure claims are complete and accurate
  • Provide guidance and technical assistance throughout the benefits application process
Case Management, Advocacy & Appeals
  • Manage a caseload of veterans and family members pursuing active claims for benefits
  • Monitor claim status and maintain appropriate communication with claimants regarding updates and required actions
  • Research, analyze, and investigate denied or disputed benefit claims
