Job Summary

The Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine at The University of Kansas Medical Center provides high‑quality, evidence‑based, patient‑centered palliative care services across inpatient and outpatient settings. The faculty member manages patients with serious and life‑limiting illnesses, including symptom management, goals‑of‑care discussions, advance care planning, psychosocial support, and interdisciplinary care coordination. In addition to clinical duties, the faculty member actively participates in the education and training of learners (medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals) and contributes to departmental and divisional academic activities through teaching, scholarly engagement, quality improvement initiatives, committee service, and other efforts that advance the missions of the division, department, and institution.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialized palliative care consultation and management services using current, evidence‑based practices to improve quality of life for patients and families facing serious illness.
  • Deliver comprehensive palliative care services across inpatient, outpatient, and other clinical settings as assigned.
  • Conduct symptom assessment and management, facilitate goals‑of‑care conversations, advance care planning, and support complex medical decision‑making.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient‑centered care.
  • Contribute to the education, training, supervision, and mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, and other learners through clinical teaching, didactic instruction, and scholarly activities.
  • Participate in departmental and divisional meetings, case conferences, teaching rounds, quality improvement initiatives, seminars, and other academic activities as assigned.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, research, quality improvement, program development, and/or community outreach efforts that advance the field of palliative medicine.
Qualifications
  • Formal medical degree (MD or DO).
  • Eligibility to practice medicine in the State of Kansas.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing palliative or hospice care in inpatient or outpatient settings.
  • Commitment to teaching, scholarly activities, and quality improvement.
Required Documents

Resume/CV and cover letter. Final candidates may be required to complete the Association of American Universities Representations and Warranties document and sign a release of records.
