Purpose

The Special Education Instructional Assistant supports the teacher in delivering an instructional program to students in the Life Skills classroom. Duties include behavioral management, living skill development, classroom and student management, and supervising student activities to maintain a safe, orderly environment.

Nature & Scope

Works with students aged 5‑14 with a wide range of disabilities and needs across various settings (school, specialized classroom, community, bus). The incumbent functions independently for most of the day, performing life‑skills training, direct instruction, and supervision under the teacher’s direction. Interaction may be high‑stakes and occasionally hostile; professional decorum and calm are essential.

Qualifications
  • Must possess an Associate’s degree, preferably in child‑focused coursework.
  • Alternatively, must have a high‑school diploma or GED plus a passing score on a qualifying academic assessment measuring reading, writing, and mathematics instruction.
  • Understanding of child development principles and instructional techniques.
  • Experience or training in behavior management and modification for students with disabilities.
  • Effective communication skills with tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
  • Ability to collect data and perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Competency operating standard office equipment (computer, word processor, calculator, photocopier).
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Essential Functions
  • Conduct oneself in the best interest of students and support the district’s mission.
  • Assist in academic instruction by working individually or with small groups:
    • Reinforce instruction.
    • Follow up on specific areas as directed by the teacher.
    • Monitor student tasks and assignments.
    • Support classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
  • Implement individual and group behavior plans independently.
  • Provide physical accommodations for students when required (e.g., mobility devices, lifting, orthopedic devices, specialized medical plans).
  • Encourage acceptable student behavior and maintain classroom discipline; supervise interactions to preserve order, control aggression, and resolve disputes.
  • Support students with emotional control, physical hygiene, and social judgment.
  • Provide classroom support (setup, distribution, collection of supplies).
  • Coordinate with teachers on lesson plans and materials.
  • Supervise student activities in playgrounds, cafeteria, bus loading, field trips, and other settings.
  • Assist students in answering questions and offering guidance.
  • Perform clerical duties with basic office equipment and software.
  • Work accurately and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain confidentiality and effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Attend required in‑services and training.
  • Follow protocol for reporting absences and complete required online training.
  • Meet physical requirements unaided or with reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
