Purpose
The Special Education Instructional Assistant supports the Teacher in the delivery of an instructional program to students in the Life Skills classroom. The Instructional Assistant supports and coordinates behavioral management and living skills development in a variety of school and life situations. The incumbent will supervise student activities to maintain a safe and orderly environment and support teacher-designed methods and materials with or without direct teacher supervision.
This role helps students function autonomously in school, work, and/or community living environments.
Nature & Scope
The Special Education Instructional Assistant works with students with disabilities in diverse settings (school, specialized classrooms, community, bus, and work sites). The incumbent may work independently for significant portions of the day, providing supervision, life skills training, and direct instruction under the teacher's direction. The work follows established classroom and school procedures as well as district and state regulations. The incumbent collaborates with students, teachers, administrators, colleagues, and parents.
The role requires professional decorum, calm, and the ability to model appropriate behavior. The incumbent does not have adult supervisory responsibilities but may guide regular or temporary staff as needed.
Qualifications — Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required
- Must possess an Associate's degree, preferably with coursework in working with children in an educational setting.
- In lieu of an Associate's degree, must possess both of the following:
- High school diploma or GED, and
- Passing score on a qualifying academic assessment that measures knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Understanding of child development principles; training/experience in instructional techniques and behavior management for disabled children and/or adults is desired.
- Effective communication with employees and students using tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
- Ability to collect data and perform basic mathematical functions.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English with accuracy, and ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment (computer, word processor, calculator, photocopier).
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Essential Functions
Under the direction of a licensed teacher, performs duties that may include:
- Assist in academic instruction and presentation by working with small groups or individual students:
- Reinforce instruction; follow up on language, spelling, reading, mathematics, and other subjects as directed by the Teacher.
- Monitor and oversee student tasks, practices, and assignments; support classroom activities and projects.
- Independently implement individual and group behavior plans.
- Provide physical accommodation to students as needed (e.g., assisting with mobility devices, lifting, assisting with orthopedic devices).
- Apply a specialized medical plan developed by a District Nurse; provide applicable physical assistance including feeding, toileting, lifting, or other required support for students in specialized programs (ages five to fourteen).
