Job Title: Middle School Head Coach

Reports To: Athletic Director

Evaluated By: Athletic Director and High School Principal

Job Goals
  • Help each participating student to achieve a high level of skill and knowledge of the sport.
  • Instill in the participants an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship.
  • Help students achieve an increased level of self-esteem.
  • Develop a positive working relationship with students, staff, administration, parents and community.
Essential Requirements
  • Possess a valid First Aid Card.
  • Completion of an annual Bloodborne Pathogen course.
  • Have a high level of competence, which may include prior participation in the sport, prior coaching experience, and completion of courses and/or clinics sufficient to provide the knowledge and skill to meet performance responsibilities.
  • Have experience teaching, working with and/or coaching students of junior high school age.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Encourage good sportsmanship, fair play, ethical conduct, good scholarship and desirable pupil‑teacher relationships.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and training for other coaches and volunteers in the junior high school programs.
  • Ensure a fair and consistent system for determining team membership, positions, and playing time.
  • Implement an effective system for ensuring the care of participants and marking of equipment and supplies; submit accurate inventory to the Athletic Director after season close.
  • Supervise participants wherever they may be present, including lockers, playing areas, training rooms, and district‑provided transportation; take all reasonable precautions for health and safety.
  • Plan for and conduct organized practice sessions that actively involve all participants in conditioning, skill development, and play practice.
  • Teach students the skills and strategies necessary to participate in the sport.
  • Teach drills and exercises needed for developing strength, stamina, and speed.
  • Take responsibility for the conduct of all players, assistant coaches and managers within jurisdiction, at home or away.
  • Make recommendations to the Athletic Director regarding scheduling and financing.
  • Adhere to school and district regulations and policies on coach conduct and student eligibility.
  • Develop lines of communication with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  • Inform students and parents in writing of training rules, practice requirements, and overall athletic policies no later than the first day of practice.
  • Assist with proper care, maintenance, and security of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Conduct grade checks upon the Athletic Director’s request.
  • Ensure student eligibility before equipment issuance or practice participation.
  • Submit to the Athletic Director a complete roster within fifteen days of beginning practice and a squad roster one week before the first game.
  • Maintain injury records and report to the Athletic Director’s office and the Office of the Principal if medical attention may be required.
  • Work constructively with colleagues to improve athlete behavior and academic success.
  • Oversee all fundraising activities related to the sport, ensuring compliance with Board policies and regulations.
  • Assist in developing the Team Handbook.
  • Enforce expectations for student athletes as expressed in the Neah‑Kah‑Nie Junior High School Student Handbook.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures expressed in the Neah‑Kah‑Nie Jr/Sr High School Coaches Handbook.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Board or administration.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance

Physical Demands

Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.

Terms of Employment

A one‑year contract renewed at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Salary according to the current salary schedule and extra‑duty schedule agreed upon in the Certified Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Evaluation

Job performance will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director.
