Job DescriptionDESCRIPTION: Under supervision of the site/school administrator, assists teachers with the instructional, behavioral and physical needs of individual students or groups of students with a variety of assets and abilities. Current position assignments are still to be determined. Multiple positions available. Annually, depending upon the need and contractual language, positions may be re‑assigned to a different PSD school; this is a school district position.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in direct instruction according to student needs using teaching techniques to address learning, physical, social/behavioral, cultural and language needs under the direction of the teacher.
- Exercises independent judgment to assist in the management of classroom & program operations in a manner consistent with administrative direction, district policies and procedures and goals of the instructional program.
- Prepares materials for instruction as directed by the teacher.
- Provides individualized and small group instruction under the direction of the teacher.
- Follows learning strategies designed by the teacher to reinforce and modify student skills.
- May assist with adaptive physical education and/or swimming activities.
- Records and maintains accurate student data to document student performance and progress.
- Serves as liaison to promote communication between student(s), peers and teachers.
- Implements and assists students in the behavior management program.
- Instructs students in appropriate interpersonal actions, responds to behavioral & discipline concerns, acts as a role model.
- Promotes safety of students by helping them develop self-confidence and social skills.
- Supervises students inside and outside of the classroom to support the district/school’s instructional and behavioral programs.
- May assist students with personal care tasks including but not limited to feeding, hygiene, clothing, diapering and toileting.
- May assist students with therapy, physical movement, transporting, lifting and carrying of students, and specialized communication devices and techniques.
- Performs minor medical and health procedures as requested accorded to district guidelines and state standards.
- Attends/completes in‑service training and workshops related to area of assignment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that enhances learning and establishes and maintains the confidence of staff, students and the public.
- Observe laws, district policies and procedures and professional standards for the position.
- Establish and maintain confidentiality and the privacy of students, staff and parents.
- Establish and maintain harmonious, cooperative and effective working relationships with school personnel, students and the public.
- Work collaboratively as a team member.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality at work and in meeting deadlines, following daily schedule, and attending meetings and trainings.
- Develop job skills necessary to meet the changing needs of the position.
- Maintain personal appearance and hygiene as required by the position as defined by the district.
- Meet physical ability, health and safety guidelines for the position.
- May require two years of college level coursework or demonstrated proficiency in English, spelling and mathematics with a passing score on a district‑approved assessment.
- Experience working with children with a variety of assets and abilities preferred.
- Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups of all ages.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and to promptly follow instructions.
- Independently organize and carry out work assignments.
- Collect, record, store, retrieve, organize and utilize information and records efficiently.
- Understand and implement the school’s instructional goals and direct the work of students.
- Understand and implement the student discipline policy and manage student behavior effectively.
