Position: 2026 - 27 High School SPED Teacher (1.0 FTE)

High School Special Education Teacher (1.0 FTE)

Gaston School District is a 2A school district located 35 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon. This small‑town district offers convenient access to Portland, the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood skiing, and many recreational opportunities. The district operates a unified campus in the City of Gaston, serving students from Preschool through 12th grade.

Job Summary

Hiring a High School Special Education Teacher for the 2026‑27 school year. Required qualifications include an Oregon Teaching License, valid TSPC license with Special Education endorsements for grades 7‑12, and a high‑qualified status. The teacher will design, implement, and assess instructional programs for students in special education across self‑contained, team, departmental, or itinerant settings.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that meet district curriculum requirements and include written evidence of preparation.
  • Prepare lessons that accommodate differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Oregon Department of Education, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment tailored to students’ needs.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Cooperate with classroom teachers to modify curriculum for special education students per IEP guidelines.
  • Collaborate with staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods in line with district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Manage assigned caseload accurately and efficiently.
  • Adhere to deadlines for completing required special‑education paperwork.
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs for each student.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Collect student performance data to determine progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
  • Serve as a positive role model, supporting the mission of Gaston School District.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to present information efficiently, accurately, and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file required reports, records, and documents.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform duties professionally, ethically, and responsibly.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel and student information.
  • Adhere to safety rules and policies of the GSD safety program.
  • Support district goals and objectives and follow all policy.
  • Attend work regularly and reliably to avoid disruption to district operations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assist with supervision of assigned teacher aide(s) and department schedules.
Qualifications
  • Oregon Teaching License with highly qualified status.
  • Demonstrated instructional skills, including strong reading, writing, and math techniques and strategies.
  • Effective communication skills with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Ability to collaborate with grade‑level teammates and other staff on lesson and program design.
  • Work initiative and leadership skills.
  • Ability to assess students and use data for instruction; excellent computer skills preferred.
  • Willingness to serve on building and/or district committees.
Benefits and Compensation

Placement on the negotiated licensed salary agreement, a competitive salary range of $47,985 to $92,593 per year, and comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, contingent upon the negotiated contract. Please note, salary figures are based on the 2025‑26 structure; final compensation for 2026‑27 is subject to collective bargaining negotiations.
