Job DescriptionGaston School District is inviting applications for a Special Education Instructional Assistant for the 2026-27 school year. The role will support identified students in a regular classroom setting, individualized one‑on‑one setting, or small groups, assisting the licensed teacher in instructional activities and student support.
Essential Functions- Assist the licensed teacher with instructional tasks under supervision.
- Plan and prepare classroom activities.
- Provide instruction and support to students using curriculum, strategies, and materials directed by the teacher.
- Assist students with researching post‑high‑school educational and employment options.
- Check student work, correct papers, and supervise testing.
- Perform clerical duties as requested.
- Assist with non‑instructional duties such as student supervision.
- Participate in in‑service training programs as required.
- Provide tutorial help to students.
- Operate computer software programs effectively.
- Maintain records and manage documentation independently with limited supervision.
- Assist with student mobility tasks such as lifting, transferring, and transporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work under limited supervision following standardized practices.
- Lead, guide, and coordinate students under the direction of a licensed teacher.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel.
- Maintain a valid high school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: at least two years of post‑high‑school education or a passing Work Keys score demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Maintain current First Aid/CPR certification and implement medical protocols as needed.
- Training or experience working with youth is preferred.
- Demonstrate the ability to work harmoniously with others.
The position requires a mix of sitting, walking, and standing. Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity. The role is performed in a clean indoor environment from late August through mid‑June.
Qualifications and RequirementsEducation: High School Diploma required;
Associate’s Degree preferred.
Experience: Experience with students in a special education setting preferred.
Certifications: CPR/First Aid certification.
Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance;
Criminal Background Check.
Skills: Basic math, reading technical information, effective communication, problem solving, and maintaining confidentiality.
Other: Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and apply determined processes.
CompensationClassified instruction assistant hourly rate commensurate with experience. Hourly range: $18.44 to $23.39 — subject to collective bargaining negotiations for the 2026‑27 school year.
