Location: Rockaway Beach

Student Behavior Specialist Assistant (District-Wide)

This position requires a pre-employment drug screen and background checks and is a District position.

Reports To: Special Education/Student Services Director

Evaluated By: Special Education/Student Services Director

Job Goal: The position supports students with behavioral, social, and emotional needs through the implementation of intervention plans and evidence-based support strategies. Services are provided district-wide across multiple schools and educational settings. Responsibilities include direct student support, staff coaching and consultation, skill-building assistance, and fostering positive student outcomes. The employee collaborates with teachers, specialists, and families to help maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.

Essential Requirements: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR , Oregon Department of Education.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a combination of a two-year degree or coursework and experience.
  • Demonstrate a compassionate, student-centered approach in all interactions and decision-making.
  • Ability to work harmoniously, collaboratively, and as a team with educators, families, and community partners.
  • Communicate effectively (both orally and in writing), and establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to apply verbal and written instructions, policies, and procedures while demonstrating initiative and self-direction.
  • Ability to adjust priorities and approaches and demonstrate flexibility to meet the varying needs of students and schools.
  • Maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior and safeguard the confidentiality of students, student records, and sensitive information while adhering to district policies and legal requirements.
  • Directly implement positive behavioral interventions and supports for individual students and small groups to address emotional, social, and behavioral needs across the district.
  • Provide behavioral consultation and coaching to staff, grounded in the belief that all students can learn and grow, emphasizing proactive, trauma-informed practices and interventions.
  • Learn and implement evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies, including Skills-Based Treatment (Teaching), Collaborative Problem Solving, Restorative Practices, and other evidence-based practices identified by the district.
  • Ability to work effectively in environments supporting complex learning and physical disabilities and/or social, emotional, and behavioral needs, including high-intensity behavioral dysregulation, which can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing; perform the physically demanding requirements of the job.
  • Create, conduct, and monitor data collection systems related to students' emotional, social, and behavioral needs.
  • Under the general supervision of licensed educators, deliver training and professional development related to behavior interventions and strategies.
  • Ability to follow specific protocols provided by a teacher, school specialist, or school nurse with students who require attention to basic feeding, personal hygiene needs, or medical procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to various environments while maintaining strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in using computers and technology systems for communication, data collection, reporting, and student support, and the ability to type accurately, operate standard office equipment such as a computer, copier, and word processor, and operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Perform physical requirements, which may include:

    A. Moderate degree of physical stamina.

    B. Frequent standing, walking, and bending.

    C. Physically restraining a student as needed, following appropriate training.

    D. Possible exposure to bodily fluids while assisting students with using restrooms and tending to injury and illness.
