TITLE: Behavior Skills Coach — Elementary, Middle and High School

Reports to: Director of Student Services and/or designee

Purpose

The Behavior Skills Coach assists the Behavior Specialist in the support, planning, and instruction of students whose educational needs are primarily the result of significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. The Behavior Instructional Assistant may be assigned to educational programs located in public school, residential treatment, or day treatment programs.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives supervision from Director of Student Services or designee, and may receive guidance and direction from Behavior Specialist. Exercises no supervision.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Working knowledge of the provisions of the behavioral and mental health support in the educational environment
  • Knowledge of techniques and methods of student supervision and classroom management in settings involving students with moderate to severe learning and/or physical disabilities and/or social/behavioral problems
  • Positive attitude and works well with children, supervisors, and district and building staff
  • Comprehend and follow written and oral instructions and complete work within established timelines
  • Flexible and able to work harmoniously with others
  • Willing to learn and implement new programs
  • Proficient English usage, grammar and punctuation skills
  • Basic technology skills
  • Possess or ability to obtain First Aid certification
  • Ability to stay calm during high stress situations
Essential Responsibilities
  • Assists teaching individual and small groups of students curriculum (K-12) which has been specially designed by in collaboration with the teacher. Including behavior plans, classroom schedules and reinforcement systems.
  • Assists Supports/Develops initial plans and fine tunes plans in collaboration with building staff with the development and implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments and behavior intervention plans
  • Implements social skills instruction and behavior intervention plans specially designed by the behavior/treatment staff
  • Utilizes crisis prevention intervention strategies including, when necessary, the use of safe restraint techniques
  • Communicates with staff and students during instruction and interpersonal interaction using language structure, tone and body language that promotes positive student behavior, conflict resolution and problem solving, effective management of power struggles, and applies proactive strategies for management of escalating behavior
  • Completes routine clerical tasks. Collects and records data , creates and maintains data collection systems and provides regular updates, reviews, reports to students’ school team.
  • Based on individual student schedules, supervises provides behavioral support for students during recess, breaks, and lunch, and escorts students to various locations in the facility including to and from the bus and/or classrooms
  • Communicates and collaborates, as a member of the district team, with other education staff, behavior/treatment staff and parents, under the direction or upon request of the behavior specialist or Director of Student Services or designee
  • Completes routine clerical tasks
  • Assists with maintenance of a clean, safe and healthy learning environment
  • Modeling with regards to individualized behavior planning, serves as a source of support, coaching, and assistance to building staff for assigned students
  • Provides students a safe and secure environment at all times. This may include separate classroom facilitation and supervision, playground supervision crosswalk duty, cafeteria duty and small group management based on the individual needs of students
  • Attends workshop training related to area of assignment; applying training to instructional and supervision responsibilities
  • Helps students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults; promote safety of the students by helping them develop self-confidence
